Central Park, Nov 2–8: the emptiest week on the calendar, at 68° and sunny
The marathon is behind us and the drives are open again. What follows is the quietest week Central Park has on its books all year — Monday through Thursday have not a single one-off event between them — and it arrives at 65°, 67° and 68° under full sun. If you have been waiting for the park to yourself, this is it.
Weather this week
Mostly sunny and absurdly mild through Wednesday — 65°, 67°, 68° — then rain settles in Thursday and stays through Saturday, with Sunday clearing to 63°. Take Monday through Wednesday; whatever you were saving for the weekend, do it midweek instead.
Mon Nov 2 – Thu Nov 5 — the drives are back, and nothing is booked
The roads are yours. The marathon’s permit envelope runs on paper through November 10, so expect fencing and trailers still coming down along the west side and around Tavern on the Green — but that is cleanup crews, not a closure. No drive is shut any day this week.
And the public calendar is genuinely empty. Four days, zero scheduled events. Two or three private bookings a day and that is all.
- Mon–Wed is the best riding and running of the month. 65°, 67°, 68°, dry, no race traffic, no permits on the loop. Go long on Wednesday if you can only pick one.
- Bird Watching with Birding Bob — Strawberry Fields Monday 8:30, Loeb Boathouse Thursday 8:30.
- New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery, weekdays 9–5, free. A good rainy-Thursday hour.
- Lawn maintenance at the East 106th Street Lawn, Monday through Thursday.
Thursday brings 70° with a 50% chance of rain — the warmest day of the week and the first wet one.
Fri Nov 6 — two Conservancy walks before the rain sets in
Friday is 69° and light rain likely at 69%. The walks run anyway:
- Woodland Walk: The Ramble, 10 AM from Belvedere Castle.
- Iconic Views of Central Park, 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.
- Birding Bob at the Conservatory Garden, 8:30 AM — the best venue in his rotation and the one worth the trip uptown.
Sat Nov 7 — eighteen private bookings and the North Woods
65° with showers around 47%. Eighteen private bookings, the busiest ceremony day in weeks — two at Shakespeare Garden, the rest scattered through Heckscher. If you are wandering, the romantic spots are taken.
- Woodland Walk: The North Woods, 10 AM from Dana Discovery Center.
- Seneca Village Tour, 2 PM from Mariners’ Gate.
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM.
- East Meadow is closed for maintenance — the lawn, not the drive beside it. Running and riding are unaffected.
- Fifteen soccer bookings at North Meadow plus frisbee and kickball at Heckscher. The leagues are back up after two thin weeks.
Sun Nov 8 — the week’s one real cluster
63° and mostly sunny — the best day of the weekend by a wide margin. Everything happens at once:
- Leaf Peeping Hike with the Urban Park Rangers, 1–2:30 PM from Boys’ Gate at West 100th. Free, and the timing is right for peak color up north.
- Animal Rescue Red Carpet at Literary Walk, 10 AM–noon.
- International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza, 11 AM–3 PM, back to full length after the marathon cut them short.
- NYMS Mushroom Research Meeting at the East 102nd Street Landscape, 10 AM–3 PM — genuinely a mycological survey, and they do not mind company.
- Woodland Walk: The Ramble 10 AM, Iconic Views 2 PM, Birding Bob at Loeb Boathouse 7:30 AM.
- East Meadow closed again; eleven more soccer and frisbee bookings at North Meadow.
Steady all week
- Bethesda Terrace and Fountain — closed all day, every day, now through December 1. That is a twelfth extension. The permits have been rolling forward since mid-October and have now crossed out of November entirely.
- Field permits are back to 71 for the week, 56 of them at North Meadow. Two weeks ago I called the leagues finished; they were not.
- No play on the Great Lawn for a fifteenth week — and still no closure or maintenance permit anywhere in the record to explain it.
- Nothing at the Delacorte, and no concerts. The next music on the books is the Carmel High School Jazz Band on November 16.
Quick recap
- The drives are open. Nothing on the loop any day this week; the marathon paperwork running to Nov 10 is load-out, not closure.
- Mon–Wed: 65°, 67°, 68°, sunny, and literally nothing scheduled. The best midweek stretch of the year.
- Rain Thursday through Saturday, clearing to a sunny 63° Sunday.
- Sunday is the day to be in the park — leaf peeping, folkdancers, mushrooms and the Ramble walk all in one morning.
- Bethesda is closed into December. Twelfth extension.
See you out there, Kin
