Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 31–Nov 6: the marathon lands, and the envelope keeps flagging for nine days after it
Marathon weekend, and then the data problem it leaves behind. The race is Sunday; the permit that covers it runs to November 10. From Monday the drives are open and the newsletter’s own flag will still say otherwise for nine more days — which is the clearest illustration yet of a question this digest has been circling all autumn.
Also: a forecast correction worth making explicitly, and Bethesda now holds the whole of November.
Weather — and a correction I owe you
Today 58° and sunny. Sunday 61°, mostly sunny, 0% rain. Then 66°, 67°, 70°, 71°, with showers Thursday and storms likely Friday.
Last week I wrote that 69° is warm for a marathon and that race-day temperature is a thing this event’s history turns on. The forecast has come down to 61° and dry. That is near-ideal and the caution no longer applies. I would rather withdraw it in the same place I made it than let it stand uncorrected.
A 70° Wednesday in November is also worth recording on its own — and dry, warm weather over an empty calendar is when restoration gets scheduled, so watch for new lawn closures appearing next week.
The envelope outlives the event
The marathon permit — 890891, twenty-four days, twenty-one locations — flags every day from October 18 to November 10. The race ends Sunday at 5 PM. The flag runs another nine days.
So from Monday the drives are genuinely open while our data says a loop-affecting event is in progress. I have written around it again, telling readers plainly that Monday reopens the roads and that what remains is strike work.
That is the fifth time this autumn correct tagging would have produced a misleading newsletter — after Global Citizen collapsed to one line, the triathlon collapsed and dropped from the lead, the “Party” permits deleted outright, and the envelope’s twenty-four-day flag last week. The tagging has been right every single time. What is missing is a distinction between a permit that reserves ground and a permit that closes a road.
The holiday permits land next. Thanksgiving, the tree lighting, New Year’s Eve and the Midnight Run all carry the same multi-day envelope shape. Settling this before they arrive would be worth more than any single fix made so far, and it is a design decision rather than a bug — which is why I keep bringing it to you rather than patching it.
Marathon weekend, as permitted
| When | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sat Oct 31, 8–12 | Dash to the Finish Line 5K Finish | Grand Army Plaza |
| Sat Oct 31, 8:45–11 | Dash to the Finish Line 5K | Ted Corbitt Loop |
| Sun Nov 1, 8 AM–5 PM | TCS New York City Marathon | Ted Corbitt Loop |
Unchanged across three consecutive pulls. The Folkdancers remain permitted 11–3 rather than 11–6 on race day.
The league season is ending
Field permits are down to 66 for the week, 61 of them at North Meadow, 3 at Heckscher, 2 on the tennis courts. Against a September peak of 223 across the park, that is a season closing.
The Great Lawn stays at zero for a fourteenth week, with no closure or maintenance permit anywhere in the record. It has now been absent from the league calendar for longer than it was present on it this autumn, and nothing in the permit system has ever said why.
Bethesda Terrace, eleventh extension
Now November 30 — the whole month. The sequence: October 13, 25, 27, November 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30. Twelve readings, eleven extensions, ten weeks closed, and not once a stated reason.
A note on verification
The NYC Parks feed dropped from 44 events to 23 to 13 across three pulls, which looked exactly like a cache failing open to empty. It is not: the cache spans October 31 to January 1 and is correctly forward-looking, with 8 November entries, 3 December and 1 January. October simply aged out and the Parks winter calendar is thin.
Worth saying because the two look identical from the outside, and the difference only shows if you open the file.
Quick recap
- Correction: Sunday is 61° and dry, not the 69° I cautioned about. Near-ideal; the warning is withdrawn.
- The marathon permit flags nine days past the race. Drives reopen Monday; our flag does not.
- Fifth time this autumn correct tagging would have misled. The missing distinction is reserving ground versus closing a road — and the holiday envelopes are next.
- Field permits down to 66 from a September peak of 223. The league season is closing.
- Great Lawn week fourteen — now absent longer than it was present this autumn, still unexplained.
- Bethesda eleventh extension, to November 30 — the whole month.
