Central Park, Oct 26–Nov 1: Monday is your last open day, then the loop goes for the weekend — and 69° is warm for a marathon
Friday’s email ran through the 30th — this one carries the weekend itself.
Monday is the last fully open day in this email. After that West Drive goes twice — an hour Wednesday, three hours Friday evening — and then the loop disappears entirely for Dash day and the marathon. Seven days without a drop of rain, and Friday hits 75°.
Weather this week
Sunny every day, 0% rain through Saturday: 69°, 60°, 61°, 69°, 75°, 70°, then 69° Sunday with a 17% shower chance.
If you are running Sunday: 69° is warm for a marathon. Not dangerous, but it is not the 50° you train for either. Drink earlier than feels necessary and go out slower than the first mile tempts you to.
Mon Oct 26 — your last open day. Use it.
69° and sunny. Nothing booked anywhere in the park. Clear drives, no crowds, no heat.
This is the last day before marathon logistics take over, and after Sunday the park spends a week recovering. Whatever your long effort is, it goes here.
Tue Oct 27 — 60°, clear, nothing booked
Also open and empty, just cooler. A good second choice.
Wed Oct 28, 9–10 AM — one hour of West Drive
The blue line gets painted. One hour, West Drive, the course line going down. Worth stopping for rather than routing around — it is the line you have run over all year, and it only gets laid once.
61° and sunny otherwise, drives clear.
Thu Oct 29 – Fri Oct 30 — then the west side goes
Thursday is 69° and clear with nothing in the way.
Friday is 75° and sunny, and the Opening Ceremony holds West Drive 4–7 PM. Ride or run in the morning; the west side is committed from late afternoon. Friday morning also has the Ramble woodland walk at 10 AM from Belvedere Castle — the last of the season before the race, on the best day of the week.
Sat Oct 31 — Dash day. The loop is out all morning.
Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K, 8:45–11 AM on the Ted Corbitt Loop, with the finish holding Grand Army Plaza from 8 AM.
No road miles before 11. Bridle path or Reservoir if you need to move. After it clears, 70° and sunny with the whole afternoon open — and the North Woods walk at 10 and the Conservatory Garden Tour at 11 are both well clear of the course.
Sun Nov 1, 8 AM–5 PM — the marathon
55,000 runners finishing in the park. The loop is gone for nine hours.
The thing worth knowing, if you are not running or watching: the north end is genuinely peaceful on marathon Sunday. The Ravine, the Loch and the North Woods are untouched by the course and almost nobody thinks to go there. It is one of the quietest mornings of the year in that part of the park.
Bridle path and the Reservoir track are also open, though the Reservoir gets spectators.
Steady all week
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain closed all day, every day — permits now run to November 25, a tenth extension. Nine weeks and never a stated reason.
Bird Watching with Birding Bob rotating: Strawberry Fields Monday, Loeb Boathouse Thursday and both weekend days, Conservatory Garden Friday. Migration is done, but the Ramble in November is still worth the early start.
