Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 26–Nov 1: marathon weekend arrives, Halloween is empty, and the relocation has settled
Friday’s digest ran through the 30th — this one carries the weekend itself.
Three things worth recording this week. Marathon weekend is locked and unchanged across two pulls. Halloween falls on Saturday and the park’s permit calendar has not one Halloween event on it. And the autumn’s venue relocation has finished moving: North Meadow now carries 94% of November’s field calendar.
Weather this week
Sunny every day with 0% rain through Saturday — 69°, 60°, 61°, 69°, 75°, 70° — and 69° with a 17% chance on marathon Sunday. A third consecutive flawless week, which is remarkable for late October, and the dry run-up matters for a build-out carrying scaffolding across the west side.
Worth noting for the record: 69° is warm for a marathon. Race-day temperatures are a thing this event’s own history turns on.
Halloween, and an absence worth naming
Saturday is October 31. There is no Halloween event anywhere in the park’s permit record — no parade, no trick-or-treat, no pumpkin event, nothing. What the park has instead is a road race.
For a park that permits a bench dedication, a harp circle and a greyhound meetup, an entirely empty Halloween is the kind of absence that says something. The Village parade takes that crowd and Central Park does not compete. I have been treating absences as findings all autumn — the Great Lawn’s missing closure permit above all — and this is a cleaner one: nothing is broken in the data, the occasion simply is not the park’s.
Marathon weekend, locked
Unchanged across two consecutive pulls, which for an event this size is itself the news:
| When | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Wed Oct 28, 9–10 AM | Blue Line Painting Ceremony | West Drive |
| Fri Oct 30, 4–7 PM | Opening Ceremony | West Drive |
| Sat Oct 31, 8–12 | Dash to the Finish Line 5K Finish | Grand Army Plaza |
| Sat Oct 31, 8:45–11 | Dash to the Finish Line 5K | Ted Corbitt Loop |
| Sun Nov 1, 8 AM–5 PM | TCS New York City Marathon | Ted Corbitt Loop |
Plus the 24-day envelope underneath. West Drive closes three times in six days — an hour, three hours, and then the whole loop for nine. The loop going in pieces before going entirely is a sequence I have not seen in this series.
One small marker of how far the reorganisation reaches: the International Folkdancers, who hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM every Sunday of the year, are permitted 11 AM–3 PM on November 1. Three hours shorter, for a group nowhere near the course.
The relocation has settled
November’s field permits: North Meadow 131, Heckscher 4, tennis 4. North Meadow carries 94% of the month.
That closes the question this digest has carried since mid-September. The full arc, start to finish:
| Sep 5–11 | Sep 21–27 | Oct 19–25 | November | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Great Lawn | ~70 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Heckscher | 24 | 111 | 9 | 4 |
| North Meadow | 5 | 83 | 75 | 131 |
Three venues, two moves, one autumn — and no closure or maintenance permit for either move, at any point. The Great Lawn’s absence is now thirteen weeks old and remains the longest unexplained thing in this data.
Bethesda Terrace, tenth extension
Now November 25. October 13, 25, 27, November 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25. Eleven readings, ten extensions. Nine weeks closed, never once a stated reason.
Quick recap
- Halloween is Saturday and the park has no Halloween event at all. An absence worth naming, not a data gap.
- Marathon weekend unchanged across two pulls — five permits plus the envelope, all flagged.
- West Drive closes three times in six days, then the loop entirely for nine hours Sunday.
- The Folkdancers are permitted three hours shorter on race day, nowhere near the course — a small measure of the reorganisation’s reach.
- The relocation has settled: North Meadow carries 94% of November. Still no permit for either move.
- Great Lawn week thirteen. Bethesda tenth extension, to November 25.
