Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 17–23: three charity-walk permits, all tagged 'uncategorised', and the emptiest week since August
Last week I reported a four-hour Making Strides walk arriving tagged only
Family & Community — this pipeline’s catch-all for permits that matched no rule
— and said the question was how charity walks get categorised, not one more
name. It has happened twice more, on a bigger event, starting tomorrow.
Then the park goes quiet: no public events at all Monday through Thursday, and nothing on any drive for seven days.
Weather this week
Storms tonight, Saturday clearing to 53° with 39° overnight — the coldest night of the autumn. Then a dry, gently warming week: 55°, 57°, 64°, 63°, 61°, 65°. Dry weather across a quiet calendar is when restoration work gets done, so watch for new lawn closures appearing next week.
Three charity-walk permits, none categorised
| Permit | When | Where | Tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central Park | Sat, 00:00–18:00 | Bandshell Plaza, Mineral Springs, 102nd St Cross Drive, Rumsey Playfield | Family & Community |
| Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central Park | Sun, 00:00–18:00 | same four | Family & Community |
| WICT New York Chapter — Making Strides | Sun, 08:00–12:00 | Cedar Hill | Family & Community |
Thirty-six hours across the Mall and Rumsey Playfield, plus a separate walk on Cedar Hill, and all three carry exactly one tag, which in this pipeline means “we could not classify this.” None of them reaches the walker, runner, cyclist or park-watcher interest lists. I have carried all three into this week’s editions by hand.
Two things I am deliberately not doing. I am not flagging them as loop events: the Bandshell permit names the 102nd Street Cross Drive and no park drive, and cross drives are excluded from the loop rule on purpose, as permits that stage traffic without closing the loop. Inventing a closure the permit does not state is the opposite failure from the ones fixed this autumn.
And I am not adding another name pattern. Four of those went in during
September and early October, and they only ever catch races we already know
about. “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” contains no race word at all —
no walk, run, race, 5K or mile — so no keyword rule would have caught it either.
The gap is structural: a charity walk whose title describes a cause rather than
a distance falls straight through to the catch-all. That is a decision about
TAG_RULES, and it is yours.
Mon Oct 19 – Thu Oct 22 — the emptiest stretch since August
No public events in the park for four consecutive days. The permit board holds soccer training, school programmes and lawn maintenance, and nothing else.
This is worth recording as a seasonal marker, not a gap. The park ran festivals, a triathlon, a four-night film series and a marathon training run across six weeks; it has now stopped, and the next thing on the calendar is Halloween. The only public item Monday to Thursday is a bench dedication for Bruce Rosenfeld at the Zoo on Tuesday afternoon — which is the kind of entry that only shows up when nothing else is competing for the page.
Nothing touches a drive for all seven days, for the first time since the third week of September.
North Meadow carries the leagues alone — the call I deferred
Last week I held this pending two more pulls. First one is in, and the posting-lag explanation is weakening:
| Nov total events | North Meadow | Heckscher | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 11 | 244 | 78 | 3 |
| Oct 16 | 316 | 117 | 4 |
November gained 72 events in five days. North Meadow took +39 sport permits; Heckscher took +1. Lag would fill both. October tells the same story: North Meadow 175, tennis 41, Heckscher 19 for the whole month against a September peak of 111.
Still one pull from calling it, as promised. But the shape now looks like a two-stage relocation: the Great Lawn’s leagues went to Heckscher in September, and Heckscher has since handed them to North Meadow.
The Great Lawn, week ten
Zero field permits. Five non-league bookings. No closure or maintenance permit anywhere in the record, for the tenth consecutive week.
Bethesda Terrace, seventh extension
Now November 16. The sequence: October 13, 25, 27, November 2, 4, 9, 11, 16. Eight readings, seven extensions, horizon still roughly four weeks ahead.
Quick recap
- Three Making Strides permits this weekend, all tagged only
Family & Community— thirty-six hours on the Mall plus a Cedar Hill walk, invisible to every interest list. Carried by hand. - No name pattern would have caught these — the title contains no race word. The gap is structural, in
TAG_RULES. - Four consecutive days with no public events, and nothing on a drive for seven — the emptiest week since August.
- North Meadow +39 November permits to Heckscher’s +1. Lag is looking unlikely; one pull from calling it.
- Great Lawn week ten. Bethesda seventh extension, to November 16.
- Two weeks out: Dash to the Finish Line Oct 31, the Marathon Nov 1.
