Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 12–18: a fix pays for itself, a charity walk arrives untagged, and Bethesda extends a sixth time
Friday’s digest ran through the 16th; the midweek will be familiar. Three findings are new.
Two weeks ago I reported that a race permit reading “Bandshell Plaza, Lower Loop” had scored no loop impact, because the rule that reads location had never been told the Lower Loop is the loop. A new race landed in this week’s data with that exact permit shape — and it arrived already flagged, with no hand-catching. That is the first time this autumn a fix has demonstrably caught something on its own.
A second charity walk arrived the same week and is tagged as nothing at all. And Bethesda has extended a sixth time.
Weather this week
Columbus Day 71°, Wednesday 76° — the last warm day of the year — then a twenty-degree collapse: 56° Saturday, 54° Sunday, 40° Saturday night. The seasonal break, and it is abrupt.
The Lower Loop fix caught one
The Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Walk, Thursday 8:30–11 AM, permit location “Bandshell Plaza, Lower Loop.” Flagged affects_loop automatically.
Worth being precise about why that matters. Through September, Bandshell-staging charity walks had to be caught by name, one at a time — the Buddy Walk, Race for the Cure, the Terry Fox Run. Each needed a human to notice. This one needed nothing, because the fix works off location rather than title, and location is the durable signal: a walk can be called anything, but if its permit names the Lower Loop, it is on the loop.
Three of the four loop-rule fixes this autumn have been name patterns, which only ever catch what we already know. This was the one that generalised.
A charity walk tagged as nothing
WICT New York Chapter — Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Sunday 8 AM–12 PM, Cedar Hill. Four hours, a national walk series, and in our data it carries one tag: Family & Community — which in this pipeline is the catch-all for permits that matched no rule at all.
So a four-hour charity walk is currently invisible to the walker, runner and sports-fan interest lists, and reaches anyone only through a tag that means “uncategorised.”
Two things I will not do with it. I will not flag it as a loop event: the permit names Cedar Hill and nothing else, no drives, and inventing a closure the permit does not state is the opposite failure from the ones I have been fixing. And I have not added another name pattern for it — four of those have gone in this autumn, and the pattern across them is worth your judgement rather than my fifth unilateral edit. The title carries no race word at all (“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”), so no keyword rule would have caught it either; this one is about how charity walks get categorised, not about one more name.
Wed Oct 14 – Thu Oct 15 — the East Drive hold, both days
Midnight to 8 PM, Cedar Hill and East Drive, a private booking titled only “Party.” Forty hours of road across two days.
Thursday therefore carries two loop events at once — the Pink Pony Walk on the Lower Loop 8:30–11 AM and the East Drive hold all day. Two independent loop closures on one day has not happened before in this series.
North Meadow carries the league calendar alone
Field permits this week: 83 at North Meadow, 18 tennis, 8 at Heckscher. Heckscher — which absorbed every displaced Great Lawn league through September, peaking at 111 — is down to 8.
I am not calling that a second relocation yet. November’s numbers look even starker (North Meadow 78, Heckscher 3), but November is still filling: 60 events four weeks ago, then 112, 138, 226, and 244 today, still roughly half Special Events with sports arriving late. Posting lag is the likelier explanation. I called a venue trend early once this series and it did not hold, so this one waits two more pulls.
The Great Lawn, week nine
Zero field permits. Four non-league bookings. No closure or maintenance permit anywhere in the record. Nine consecutive weeks of the same absence, now the longest-running open question in this digest.
Bethesda Terrace, sixth extension
Now November 11. The sequence: October 13, 25, 27, November 2, 4, 9, 11. Seven readings, six extensions, horizon still about four weeks out and moving with the calendar.
Quick recap
- The Lower Loop fix caught a race on its own — Pink Pony Walk, flagged automatically from its permit location. The one fix this autumn that generalised rather than pattern-matched.
- A four-hour Making Strides walk is tagged
Family & Communityand nothing else — invisible to every interest list. Not a loop event (permit is Cedar Hill only); the question is how charity walks get categorised. - Thursday carries two independent loop closures — a first in this series.
- East Drive held forty hours across Wednesday and Thursday under a permit titled “Party.”
- Heckscher down to 8 from a peak of 111. Not calling it yet — November is still filling.
- Great Lawn week nine. Bethesda sixth extension, to November 11.
