Central Park, Oct 5–11: four nights of film under clear skies, armoured combat behind the Met, and seven sunny days
Friday’s email ran through the 9th, so the midweek will be familiar — the weekend is new.
Seven consecutive sunny days, which is the best run the park has had since August — and the Conservancy has four nights of outdoor film at Cherry Hill sitting right in the middle of it, with clear skies for every screening. Saturday brings pilates on the Great Lawn, a market, model yachts, and armoured combat behind the Met.
Weather this week
Sunny every day: 71°, 64°, 68°, 74°, 72°, 71°, 68°, with a 0% rain chance Monday through Thursday. Nights fall to 49–57° — the evening films want a blanket and a thermos, not shirtsleeves.
Mon Oct 5 — an empty park at 71°
Not one scheduled event. The quietest and one of the prettiest days of the week.
Tue Oct 6 – Fri Oct 9 — the Conservancy Film Festival, four nights at Cherry Hill
The Central Park Conservancy Film Festival screens on Cherry Hill at 7 PM:
- Tue Oct 6 — Carl Sagan: We are Made of Star Stuff
- Wed Oct 7 — Time and Water
- Thu Oct 8 — Blink
- Fri Oct 9 — LION
Four clear nights running is close to unheard of for an outdoor series in October — the forecast gives every screening a 0–1% rain chance. The permit holds Cherry Hill and Frisbee Hill from 9 AM, so the lawn is dressed long before dusk. Arrive early for a spot and bring something warm.
The Conservancy’s Women’s Committee Game Event fills the Chess and Checkers House Tuesday and Thursday, 6 AM–7 PM, and New Dendrology stays at the Arsenal Gallery weekdays 9–5, free.
Thu Oct 8 – Sun Oct 11 — the Big Apple Triathlon
The Big Apple Triathlon holds all-day permits across Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Bandshell Plaza and the park drives for four straight days. For walkers that means fencing, equipment and crowds around Cherry Hill and the Lower Loop — the same ground the film festival uses, so Thursday and Friday carry both.
Sat Oct 10 — pilates on the Great Lawn, and a very full day
Pilates in the Park takes the Great Lawn, 10 AM–12 PM — the first programming on that lawn since the Global Citizen build came down, and a good sign it is open again.
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM, on Conservatory Water.
- UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 9 AM–7 PM.
- Birding Basics at Belvedere Castle at 10.
- Connect Outdoors with the Appalachian Mountain Club at the East 72nd Street Playground, 11 AM–2 PM — an introduction-and-meet-people session, free.
- Santa’s Knights and Gladiators on the lawn behind the Met, noon–4 PM. Armoured combat in Central Park, exactly as advertised.
- Iconic Views tour at 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.
71° and sunny. East Meadow closed, and 34 private ceremony bookings have the scenic spots taken.
Sun Oct 11 — folkdancers, skaters, and a kickoff at The Pool
68° and mostly sunny:
- International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza, 11 AM–6 PM.
- Central Park Skate Circle at Dead Road North, 2–7 PM.
- Northeast Young Judaea Kickoff at The Pool, 11 AM–2 PM.
- Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10; Iconic Views at 2.
Steady all week
- Bethesda Terrace and Fountain closed all day, every day — permits now run to November 4.
- Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings from Strawberry Fields. These are migration’s last good weeks.
- Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate, Thursday through Sunday.
- 194 field permits — 86 at Heckscher, 77 at North Meadow, 20 on the tennis courts, and no league play on the Great Lawn, though it is taking bookings again.
