Central Park, Oct 5–11: Monday through Wednesday are yours, then the triathlon holds the drives for four days
Friday’s email ran through the 9th, so the midweek will be familiar — the triathlon weekend is new.
The week divides cleanly. Monday through Wednesday: seven sunny days have started, nothing is booked, and the drives are clear. Thursday through Sunday: the Big Apple Triathlon holds every drive in the park on 24-hour permits. Get your week done in the first three days.
Weather this week
Sunny every single day — 71°, 64°, 68°, 74°, 72°, 71°, 68° — with a 0% rain chance Monday to Thursday and 1–4% after. Nights drop to 49–57°, which is the first proper cold of the season. Sleeves and maybe gloves for the early rides.
Mon Oct 5 — nothing booked anywhere
Not one scheduled event in the entire park. 71°, sunny, 0% rain, clear drives.
This is the best day of the week and it is not close. Whatever your long effort is, put it here.
Tue Oct 6 – Wed Oct 7 — still clear, still empty
64° and 68°, sunny, 0% rain, nothing on any drive. Nights down to 49° and 55°.
The one thing to know: Cherry Hill fills from early evening — the Conservancy’s film festival screens there at 7 PM nightly — so the Lower Loop and the 72nd Street approaches carry foot traffic after dark. Not a closure, but take lights.
Bird Watching with Birding Bob runs five mornings from Strawberry Fields at 7:30 and 8:30. Migration is tailing off — these are the last good weeks of it.
Thu Oct 8 – Sun Oct 11 — the drives are gone
The Big Apple Triathlon holds all-day permits on Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Bandshell Plaza, Center Drive, West Drive, East Drive, the 72nd Street Cross Drive and the Lower Loop — Thursday through Sunday.
Assume the loop is unavailable for all four days. These are 24-hour holds, not a race window, so there is no early gap to slip through the way you can around a Sunday morning race. If you need road miles Thursday onward, you will be checking on the ground each morning and taking what you find.
The alternatives hold up well this week: the bridle path and the Reservoir track are untouched, and with the Great Lawn open again the mid-park paths are clear.
It is a genuine shame — Thursday is 74° and sunny, the warmest day of the week.
Sat Oct 10 — the Great Lawn is usable again
Pilates in the Park takes the Great Lawn 10 AM–12 PM — which is the first programming on that lawn since the festival build came down, and a useful signal that the turf is open for business.
Birding Basics meets at Belvedere Castle at 10 and the Iconic Views tour goes at 2. 71° and sunny, East Meadow closed, 34 private bookings on the scenic spots.
Sun Oct 11 — quiet on foot, committed on the road
68° and mostly sunny. Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10, Iconic Views at 2, and the International Folkdancers at King Jagiello 11–6.
The triathlon permit still runs, so the drives stay committed through the day.
Steady all week
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is closed all day, every day, and the permits have extended a fourth time — now November 4. Seven weeks elapsed, a month still on the board.
East 106th Street lawn out Monday–Thursday; East Meadow closed both weekend days. Neither on your line.
Quick recap
