Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 5–11: a four-day drive closure our own tooling tried to bury, and the Great Lawn takes a booking
Friday’s digest ran through the 9th; the midweek will be familiar. Three findings are new.
The Big Apple Triathlon holds every drive in the park on 24-hour permits from Thursday through Sunday — four consecutive days, the longest drive closure since the Global Citizen build. Our own digest builder collapsed it into a single line in its “steady all week” bucket and left it out of the lead block entirely. That is the second time in two weeks, and this time it buried a loop closure.
Also: the Great Lawn has taken its first programming since the festival, and Bethesda has extended a fourth time.
Weather this week
Sunny every day — 71°, 64°, 68°, 74°, 72°, 71°, 68° — with a 0% rain chance Monday through Thursday. Nights 49–57°. Four consecutive dry nights for an outdoor film series, and a dry four-day triathlon build. The weather is cooperating with everything on the calendar, which is worth noting precisely because it so rarely does.
The instrument buried a loop closure
Two weeks ago I reported that the digest builder had collapsed the Global Citizen Festival into one line beside the birding walks, because its permit spanned seven days. I said the heuristic was right for a weekly class and wrong for a mega-event with a long build, and worth fixing.
It has now done it again, and worse. The Big Apple Triathlon — four days, every drive, flagged as affecting the loop, relevant to six of the ten reader interests — appears in this week’s brief as:
Big Apple Triathlon — 4 days (Thu 8-Sun 11) @ Cherry Hill
One line, in the same bucket as a birding walk. And it does not appear in the lead block at all, which is where loop-affecting events are supposed to surface.
That is the part that matters. The rule this newsletter runs on says every loop-affecting event must appear in the body, because the permit feed under-describes them. The builder’s own multi-day collapse can now defeat that rule — not by mis-tagging the event, which worked correctly, but by filing a correctly-tagged closure where nobody reads. A tagging fix does not help if the presentation layer drops it. Written around by hand again this week; it should not need a third.
Thu Oct 8 – Sun Oct 11 — the closure itself
All-day permits across Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Bandshell Plaza, Center Drive, West Drive, East Drive, the 72nd Street Cross Drive and the Lower Loop.
The permit shape is the thing to record: 24-hour holds across four days, not a timed race window. A race takes the road for three hours; this reserves it for ninety-six. That is staging-and-strike footprint, and it is the second multi-day drive hold in a month — the first being Global Citizen’s eleven days on the Great Lawn. Two in four weeks, where the preceding three weeks had none at all.
It also overlaps the film festival on Cherry Hill for two of those days. Both hold the same lawn Thursday and Friday. I flagged this last week as possibly coordinated and possibly two desks booking the same grass; it has not resolved either way, and both permits still stand.
The Great Lawn takes a booking
Pilates in the Park, Saturday 10 AM–12 PM, on the Great Lawn. That is the first scheduled programming on that lawn since the Global Citizen build came down on October 1.
It changes the reading usefully. Five non-league bookings sit on the lawn this month and now one of them is an actual public class rather than a private picnic. The lawn is open, usable and being used — it is league play specifically that has not returned, and still has no closure permit anywhere in the record to explain its absence. Seventh week of that same absence.
Venue mix: 194 field permits, 86 at Heckscher, 77 at North Meadow, 20 on the tennis courts, zero on the Great Lawn.
Bethesda Terrace, fourth extension
The permits now run to November 4. The sequence across five readings: October 13, October 25, October 27, November 2, November 4.
Four extensions in four weeks. The horizon has held at roughly four weeks ahead the entire time, moving with the calendar rather than approaching. Seven weeks elapsed. I have stopped predicting when this ends and will simply record the number each week.
Quick recap
- The digest buried a four-day loop closure in its steady-all-week bucket and omitted it from the lead block. Second occurrence in two weeks; this time it hid a drive closure, which the hard-include rule exists to prevent.
- Big Apple Triathlon: 24-hour permits on every drive, Thursday to Sunday. Second multi-day drive hold in a month.
- Triathlon and film festival hold Cherry Hill simultaneously Thursday and Friday — unresolved from last week.
- The Great Lawn takes its first booking since the festival — pilates, Saturday 10 AM. Open and used; league play specifically has not returned, still with no closure permit.
- Bethesda extends a fourth time, to November 4. A four-week horizon that moves with the calendar.
- Seven sunny days and 0% rain Monday to Thursday.
