Central Park Watcher's Digest, Oct 3–9: a permit that said 'Lower Loop' scored no loop impact, and Bethesda crosses into November
Two things this week. A race permit whose location field reads “Bandshell Plaza, Lower Loop” was carrying no loop-impact flag, because the rule that reads location had never been told the Lower Loop is the loop. That is now fixed, and it is worth understanding why it slipped. And Bethesda’s closure, which has extended three times in three weeks, has now crossed into November.
Otherwise: the Conservancy puts a film festival on Cherry Hill for four nights, the Big Apple Triathlon takes the drives from Thursday, and the weather is the best this autumn has offered.
Weather this week
Saturday 71° and sunny, Sunday 64° with 54% showers, then sunshine Monday through Friday with a 0% rain chance Tuesday on. Nights 48–56°. Four consecutive clear nights for an outdoor film series is close to unheard of in October.
A permit named the loop and the pipeline did not notice
The Terry Fox Run, Saturday 9:15–11 AM, carries the event location “Bandshell Plaza, Lower Loop.” It arrived tagged Running and Runs & Races and nothing else — no loop-impact flag at all.
The cause is narrow and instructive. The rule that catches this class works off location rather than title, on the stated principle that you cannot hold a drive without affecting the loop. But the set of names it recognises held only East Drive, West Drive, Center Drive and the Ted Corbitt Loop. The Lower Loop — the southern 1.7 miles, a named place in our own vocabulary — was not in it. A permit could say “Lower Loop” in plain language and score nothing.
It is fixed, and the fix changed exactly one event: the four Big Apple Triathlon days that also cite the Lower Loop were already flagged, because their permits name three drives as well. So the gap only ever bit a permit that named the Lower Loop and nothing else — which is precisely the permit a loop-impact rule most needs to catch.
Three loop-rule gaps have now surfaced in four weeks: a race named only by a mile distance, two charity walks staging at the Bandshell, and this. The pattern is consistent — the rule works, and its vocabulary is incomplete. I would rather report each one than imply the list is now finished.
Bethesda Terrace crosses into November
The permits now run to November 2. The sequence across four readings: October 13, October 25, October 27, November 2.
Three extensions in three weeks, each small. Seven weeks elapsed, four more on the board. I stopped calling the end date settled two weeks ago, which was right; what the shape now says is that the horizon sits roughly four weeks ahead and moves with the calendar. That is a work order being renewed, not a schedule being missed.
Tue Oct 6 – Fri Oct 9 — the Conservancy Film Festival
Four nights on Cherry Hill at 7 PM: Carl Sagan Tuesday, Time and Water Wednesday, Blink Thursday, LION Friday.
Two things worth recording. First, this resolves a long-running gap in our own data: “Central Park Conservancy Film Festival” has appeared in every merge run for weeks as an unmatched location — the Conservancy listed it with no venue. It now has one, and the permit confirms it: Cherry Hill plus Frisbee Hill, held 9 AM to 11 PM.
Second, the festival and the triathlon overlap on the same ground Thursday and Friday — both hold Cherry Hill. Two simultaneous all-day permits on one lawn is unusual enough to watch; it may be coordinated, or it may be two desks booking the same grass.
Thu Oct 8 onward — the Big Apple Triathlon
All-day permits across Cherry Hill, Wagner Cove, Bandshell Plaza, Center/West/East Drive, the 72nd Street Cross Drive and the Lower Loop, from Thursday into the following weekend.
Note the permit shape: 24-hour holds rather than a timed race window. A race occupies the road for three hours; this reserves it for four days. That is a staging-and-strike footprint, and it is the first multi-day drive closure since the Global Citizen build.
The Great Lawn, week three of the same answer
Zero field permits. Six non-league bookings in October. Still no closure or maintenance permit anywhere in the record — now six weeks of the same absence across every reading. Venue mix for October: North Meadow 326, Heckscher 137, tennis 75.
I have nothing new to add and will keep reporting it unchanged until something changes, because an absence that persists is itself the finding.
Quick recap
- A permit reading “Lower Loop” scored no loop impact until this week; the location rule’s vocabulary was missing the park’s southern loop. Fixed, one event affected.
- Three loop-rule gaps in four weeks. The rule is sound; its name list keeps proving incomplete.
- Bethesda extends into November — Oct 13 → Oct 25 → Oct 27 → Nov 2. A renewed work order, not a slipping schedule.
- Conservancy Film Festival, four nights at Cherry Hill, and it finally has a venue in our data after weeks as an unmatched location.
- Film festival and triathlon hold Cherry Hill simultaneously Thursday and Friday.
- Great Lawn unchanged: zero field permits, no closure permit, six weeks running.
