Central Park, Sep 21–27: the Global Citizen Festival, free opera Monday, and SummerStage's final two nights

        The biggest music week of the park’s year, and most of it is free. The Global Citizen Festival takes the Great Lawn on Saturday, 2–10 PM — artists and world leaders on the global food crisis, free by ticket lottery. Around it: free opera at the Bandshell on Monday, SummerStage’s last two shows Tuesday and Wednesday, and salsa on Friday.

Weather this week

Monday is the pick at 70° and partly sunny with almost no rain risk. Tuesday turns damp at 63°, and the rest of the week runs mid-60s with shower chances of 17–35%. Saturday, festival day, is 69° with a 34% chance — worth a waterproof layer for an eight-hour show.

Mon Sep 21, 6–7:30 PM — free opera at the Bandshell

Opera Italiana Is in the Air plays Bandshell Plaza. Free outdoor opera, 70° and partly sunny, and the only thing booked in the entire park that day. If you like the park at its most civilised, this is the evening.

Tue Sep 22 — Climate Week: Young the Giant at Rumsey

Music for Action brings Young the Giant, St. Lucia and a DREEEMY DJ set to Rumsey Playfield 7–10 PM — a Climate Week concert raising awareness of climate change and tick-borne disease.

Earlier: Brigadoon on the River at Bandshell Plaza 2–3 PM, and a financial vision-boarding workshop at Dana Discovery Center at 6.

Wed Sep 23 — Of Monsters and Men, and the season’s end

Of Monsters and Men play Rumsey 7–10 PM with August Ponthier — the Icelandic band behind “Little Talks.”

This is effectively SummerStage’s closing week. Only Charley Crockett on October 1 remains after Wednesday, and then the series is dark until May 2027. Kate Farms Yoga takes East Meadow 5–6 PM beforehand.

Thu Sep 24 – Fri Sep 25 — a climate panel, then salsa

Thursday the Building Cross-Sector Ecosystems for Climate Action panel runs at the Arsenal 6–8 PM — free, indoors, the thinking half of Climate Week.

Friday, Carlos Konig Salsa plays Bandshell Plaza 5–7:30 PM, with the Iconic Views tour at 2 PM.

Sat Sep 26, 2–10 PM — the Global Citizen Festival

The Global Citizen Festival on the Great Lawn: top artists and world leaders together on the global food crisis and debt relief. Free, by ticket lottery — and if you have not entered, it is worth knowing you cannot simply walk in.

Tens of thousands will be in mid-park for eight hours. Both transverses and every Great Lawn approach will be dense from noon onward, so plan any other park business for the morning.

And the morning is good: Free Yoga in Central Park on East Meadow at 11, the Conservatory Garden Tour at 11, Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs 9 AM–3 PM, and the Farmstand and Unity Market at Dana Discovery Center 9 AM–8 PM. Tango at the Shakespeare Statue runs 6–9 PM well away from the crowd.

Sun Sep 27 — greyhounds on the Dairy Lawn and a new marionette show

The best family day of the month, and the park is quiet again:

  Greyhounds of NYC Meetup, Dairy Lawn, 10 AM–1 PM. Precisely what it sounds like.
  Pinocchio and Geppetto’s NYC Adventure at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, 2–3 PM — a new production, and indoors if the weather turns.
  International Sunday at Bandshell Plaza 10 AM–2 PM; International Folkdancers at King Jagiello 11–6; Skate Circle at Dead Road 2–7.
  Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10 and the Seneca Village Tour at 2.

Steady all week

  The Great Lawn is under permit every day through September 30, noon to 11 PM, for the festival build-out. Zero field permits remain on it — league play has moved to Heckscher and North Meadow.
  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain closed all day, every day, through October 13.
  New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery, weekdays 9–5, free and indoors.
  Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings from Strawberry Fields.
