Central Park Watcher's Digest, Sep 19–25: the Great Lawn has emptied out, and nothing in the permit record says why

The story this week is a number that fell off a cliff. The Great Lawn carried roughly eighty field permits a fortnight ago; it carries fourteen this week. Heckscher has gone from 24 to 103 across a month. I called this relocation last week and said I would watch for a closure permit confirming it. There is no such permit. The Great Lawn has emptied without anything in the record explaining it, and that gap is now the thing to chase.

Weather this week

Saturday is the last dry day at 71° and partly sunny; Sunday brings all-day rain at 89%, and the rest of the week sits at 63–67° with showers possible daily. This is the seasonal break. Note it against the lawn question: a restoration schedule would ordinarily be racing to finish before weather like this, not starting into it.

The Great Lawn, and the missing permit

Heckscher has more than quadrupled and North Meadow has multiplied fifteen-fold, while the Great Lawn has lost four-fifths of its load. Total volume is up — 208 permits, from 105 five weeks ago — so this is not the season ending. It is the leagues moving off one venue onto two others.

Last week I offered autumn turf protection as the explanation and committed to confirming it with a closure permit. I searched the full forward calendar for any Great Lawn closure or maintenance permit and found none. So the honest position is: the migration is real and measured, the cause is not in the data, and I was premature to name one. Either the closure is scheduled outside the permit system, or something else is moving the leagues. Worth a look on the ground while the weather is still walkable.

Sat Sep 19 — the heaviest booking day of the season

Forty private ceremony bookings on Saturday alone, against a previous high of 32. Total for the week is 95, the fifth consecutive weekly rise (50 → 66 → 79 → 89 → 91 → 95), though the curve has clearly flattened.

The day also carries the 25th Annual Chess-in-the-Park Rapid Open at Bandshell Plaza 11 AM–5 PM, the Osborn Cup on Bowling Green across both weekend days, and the 28th Annual SCTPN Walk at Dead Road North 9 AM–1 PM. Two twenty-fifth-and-older annual traditions in one Saturday is a good marker of where the autumn calendar sits.

Sun Sep 20 — the 18-miler, recorded twice

NYRR’s 18-mile training run holds East Drive and the 102nd Street Cross Drive 7 AM–1:30 PM under an 89% rain chance.

One for the data pile: this event appears in our records twice — once as the permit feed’s “2026 Training Run 18M” at the 102nd Street Cross Drive, and once as NYRR’s own “TCS New York City Marathon Training Series 18M” on the Ted Corbitt Loop. Different IDs, different end times (1:30 PM versus noon), same run. The permit window is the road closure; NYRR’s is the race. Both are correctly flagged as affecting the loop, so nothing is missed — but it is a reminder that the two sources describe the same ground in different vocabularies.

Mon Sep 21 — a day with nothing in it

Not one one-off permit anywhere in the park. In a season of forty-booking Saturdays, a completely empty Monday is worth recording.

Climate Week takes the park midweek

Three events across Tuesday to Thursday: Music for Action at Rumsey Tuesday with Young the Giant and St. Lucia, explicitly framed around climate change and tick-borne disease; Of Monsters and Men Wednesday; and a Cross-Sector Ecosystems for Climate Action panel at the Arsenal Thursday evening. A themed week landing across both the concert venue and the Arsenal is a pattern worth watching for — the park as a Climate Week venue rather than a backdrop.

SummerStage is nearly done

Four shows remain in the entire series: Young the Giant Tuesday, Of Monsters and Men Wednesday, Charley Crockett on October 1, and then nothing until May 2027. The outdoor concert season closes October 1. The weather backlog the venue was absorbing last month has cleared.

Bethesda Terrace, week four

Still closed all day, every day. The permits still run to October 13, unchanged from last week’s reading — which is itself mildly reassuring: an end date that holds steady across two weeks of data is a schedule, not a rolling extension.
