Central Park, Sep 14–20: an 18-mile training run takes the loop Sunday, and Bethesda's closure finally has an end date

Friday’s email covered through the 18th, so the first half of this one will look familiar — the new material is next weekend, and it is worth the second message.

Two things you could not have known on Friday. NYRR’s marathon training series puts an 18-mile run on the loop next Sunday morning, 7 AM to noon — the longest single occupation of the road since spring. And the Bethesda Terrace closure, which has run without explanation for weeks, now shows an end: the permits run contiguously to October 13 and stop.

Weather this week

Monday clears after a damp start at 74°, then Tuesday through Thursday are the best three days of the month — sunny and 72°, 78°, 83° — before shower chances creep back Friday and build through the weekend to 37% on Sunday. Take the midweek at face value; next weekend is the part to watch.

Mon Sep 14 – Wed Sep 16 — three clear days and an almost empty calendar

Dance Is Life at Bandshell Plaza Monday 5–7 PM, a Starlight Dinner at Naturalists’ Gate 6–9 PM, and Danny Elfman at Rumsey Tuesday 8:30 PM — the Batman and Simpsons composer, outdoors. Bowling Green is closed all day Tuesday.

Wednesday is sunny, 78°, and effectively empty. If you have a long ride or run in you, these are the days.

Thu Sep 17 – Fri Sep 18 — two rescheduled shows

New York Sings Yiddish plays Rumsey Thursday 7–10 PM, moved all the way from a June storm. Friday brings a sold-out, twice-rescheduled Yeat at 8 PM, plus Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10, the Seneca Village Tour at 2, and a Grade 8 picnic filling the Heckscher lawns.

Sat Sep 19 — an ordinary good Saturday

The Osborn Cup holds Bowling Green 7 AM–6 PM, both weekend days — lawn bowls, worth a look if you have never seen it. Model yachts at Kerbs 9–3, UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate 9–7, That Guitar Man at Hernshead noon–6, the Iconic Views tour at 2, Skate Circle at Dead Road 2–7, and tango at the Shakespeare Statue 6–9 PM.

76° with a slight shower chance. East Meadow closed.

Sun Sep 20, 7 AM–noon — the 18-miler takes the loop

The TCS New York City Marathon Training Series 18M runs the Ted Corbitt Loop from 7 AM to noon — the second and longer leg of NYRR’s marathon build-up, and five straight hours of runners on the road.

Do not plan a ride Sunday morning. The loop is committed until midday; go before 7, after 12, or use the bridle path. Walkers are fine on the paths but the drives will be dense. There is a 37% shower chance on top of it.

The afternoon is unusually good, though:

• Justin Lees Jazz Group at Bandshell Plaza, 1–4 PM.
• Chess & Checkers House Community Play from 1 PM — casual games, beginners explicitly welcome.
• Pinocchio in the Park at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, 2–3 PM.
• International Folkdancers at King Jagiello, 11–6. Skate Circle at Dead Road, 2–7.
• Society Strong: Workout Social on the Adventure Playground Lawn, 3:30–6 PM.

Steady all week

• Bethesda Terrace and Fountain — the all-day “Closed” permits now run unbroken from today to October 13, 31 more days with no gap and still no stated reason. At least we can see the end of it.
• New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery, weekdays 9 AM–5 PM, free.
• Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings, meeting at Strawberry Fields, 7:30 and 8:30.
• East Meadow closed both weekend days; East 106th Street lawn out Monday–Thursday.
