Central Park, Sep 14–20: Pinocchio at the Marionette Theatre, jazz at the Bandshell, and the month's best three days

Friday’s email ran through the 18th, so the front half will look familiar — next weekend is the new material.

Next Sunday afternoon is the one to circle: a marionette Pinocchio at the Swedish Cottage, jazz at the Bandshell, and open chess for anyone who wants to sit down and play — all within a few hundred yards of each other. Before that, Tuesday through Thursday bring the best weather of the month, and Danny Elfman plays Rumsey on Tuesday night.

Monday clears to 74° after a damp start, then Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are sunny and dry at 72°, 78° and 83°. Shower chances return Friday and build through next weekend to 37% on Sunday — so the outdoor afternoon programming on the 20th is worth checking before you set out.

Mon Sep 14 – Wed Sep 16 — quiet, clear, and one big concert

Dance Is Life takes Bandshell Plaza Monday 5–7 PM, with a Starlight Dinner at Naturalists’ Gate 6–9 PM. Tuesday brings Danny Elfman to Rumsey Playfield at 8:30 PM — the composer of Batman, Beetlejuice and the Simpsons theme, outdoors in the park, which is the most distinctive booking of the month. Bowling Green is closed all day Tuesday.

Wednesday is sunny, 78°, and nearly empty: a mobile health unit at Central Park North, a corporate team-building session at Cleopatra’s Needle.

Thu Sep 17 — New York Sings Yiddish, finally

New York Sings Yiddish plays Rumsey 7–10 PM — YidLife Crisis, Yair Keydar, Riki Rose and Daniella Rabbani, rescheduled all the way from a June storm. A one-off, and free.

Fri Sep 18 — a sold-out closer and a school picnic

Yeat at Rumsey 8–10 PM, sold out and twice moved. Earlier: Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10, the Seneca Village Tour at 2, the Osborn Cup starting its two-day run on Bowling Green, and a Grade 8 picnic filling the Heckscher lawns 10–2.

Sat Sep 19 — model yachts, a guitar man, and tango

• Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM, on Conservatory Water.
• UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 9 AM–7 PM.
• That Guitar Man from Central Park at Hernshead, noon–6 PM.
• Iconic Views tour at 2 PM; Central Park Skate Circle at Dead Road 2–7 PM.

Sun Sep 20 — the best afternoon of the month

The morning belongs to runners: NYRR’s 18-mile marathon training run holds the loop 7 AM–noon, so the drives are dense and the paths are busy. Come after lunch instead, when four good things happen at once:

• Pinocchio in the Park at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre, 2–3 PM — the park’s own puppet theatre, and the rare indoor option if the showers arrive.
• Justin Lees Jazz Group at Bandshell Plaza, 1–4 PM.
• Chess & Checkers House Community Play from 1 PM — casual games, first-timers explicitly welcome.
• International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11–6, Skate Circle at Dead Road 2–7, and a Society Strong workout social on the Adventure Playground Lawn 3:30–6.
