Central Park, Sep 12–18: five nights of SummerStage, a chess master against thirty players, and a wet Sunday

        The busiest week the park has had all season. SummerStage plays five of the seven nights, two charity events take the Bandshell on back-to-back mornings, and a chess master takes on thirty players at once on Saturday. The one thing to plan around is Sunday, which carries an 83% chance of thunderstorms over everything scheduled outdoors.

Weather this week

Saturday is the weekend’s good day at 79° and mostly sunny; Sunday turns at 79° with an 83% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Monday through Wednesday are clear and mild at 74–79° — the best stretch for anything unhurried — with showers returning Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Sat Sep 12 — the fullest day of the season

Chess lecture and simul with IM Kassa Korley, 11 AM at the Chess and Checkers House. He teaches first, then plays up to thirty people simultaneously — the best free spectacle of the week, and one a child will remember.

The rest of the day, in rough order:

  Birding Basics at Belvedere Castle, 10 AM; Conservatory Garden Tour at 11; Seneca Village Tour at 2 from Mariners’ Gate.
  Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM. UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 9–7.
  Santa’s Knights and Gladiators on the lawn behind the Met, noon–4 — armored combat, exactly as odd as it sounds.
  That Guitar Man from Central Park at Hernshead, noon–6 PM.
  Tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM.
  Marcus King Band at Rumsey Playfield, 7–10 PM.

The NDSS New York City Buddy Walk holds Bandshell Plaza and Dead Road North 10 AM–2 PM, so the Mall and the 72nd Street approaches are crowded through midday. East Meadow is closed, and 32 private ceremony bookings make this the heaviest booking day of the season.

Sun Sep 13 — Race for the Cure, and rain over all of it

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes Bandshell Plaza 9 AM–2 PM, and the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile runs at 7:25 that morning. Both sit under an 83% thunderstorm chance, so check before you set out — a charity race in weather like this is a schedule that changes.

The gentler things, if it clears: International Sunday on the Great Hill Oval 10 AM–2 PM, a Celtic Harp Circle at Cop Cot noon–2 PM, the International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11–6, and the Summer Pollinator Walk from Boys’ Gate at 10, near the end of its season. Young Thug closes the night at Rumsey, 8–10 PM.

Mon Sep 14 – Wed Sep 16 — clear, mild, and quiet

Dance Is Life at Bandshell Plaza Monday 5–7 PM, and a Starlight Dinner at Naturalists’ Gate 6–9 PM. Tuesday brings Danny Elfman to Rumsey at 8:30 PM — the Batman and Simpsons composer outdoors, which is the most distinctive booking of the week. Bowling Green is closed all day Tuesday.

Wednesday is nearly empty and sunny at 79°: a mobile health unit at Central Park North and a corporate team-building session at Cleopatra’s Needle.

Thu Sep 17 — New York Sings Yiddish, finally

New York Sings Yiddish plays Rumsey 7–10 PM, rescheduled all the way from a June storm. YidLife Crisis, Yair Keydar, Riki Rose and Daniella Rabbani — a one-off worth the trip if the music is your thing.

Fri Sep 18 — a sold-out closer and a school picnic

Yeat at Rumsey, 8–10 PM, sold out and twice rescheduled. Earlier: Birding Basics at Belvedere at 10, the Seneca Village Tour at 2, the Osborn Cup on Bowling Green all day, and a Grade 8 picnic filling the Heckscher lawns 10–2.

Steady all week

  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain sits under an all-day permit titled only “Closed” every day again — 21 consecutive days across three weeks, no reason recorded.
  New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery, Monday–Friday 9 AM–5 PM, free.
  Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings from Loeb Boathouse.
  CP Sports Summer Program at South Dead Road, Monday–Friday.
  182 field permits — roughly eighty on the Great Lawn, sixty at Heckscher, 24 at North Meadow. Heckscher has more than doubled in a week.
