Central Park, Sep 7–13: SummerStage comes back for two nights, and a third clear week on the drives

        A correction before anything else: the edition that reached you earlier today covered Sep 5–11, and two of those days had already gone by. This is the right one — Monday the 7th through Sunday the 13th. Sorry for the double message.

The week SummerStage returns. Rumsey Playfield has been sitting under empty permits for two weeks; on Saturday the Marcus King Band fills one and on Sunday Young Thug fills the other. Everything before that is quiet — a sunny Labor Day, three empty midweek days, and still nothing on any drive, which makes three clear weeks running.

Weather this week

Labor Day is sunny and 79°, Tuesday and Wednesday climb into the low 80s under sun, Thursday peaks at 87° with the week’s best shower chance, and then Friday and Saturday come back down to a comfortable 79–80° and clear. The two concert nights land on the good side of that — plan the hard efforts for Monday morning or Friday, and treat Thursday as the day to be indoors.

Mon Sep 7 — Labor Day, and an almost empty park

Sunny, 79°, two permits on the entire board: Central Park Skate Circle at Dead Road North 2–7 PM and the Public Works Picnic rain date at the Delacorte 5–6 PM. Two private bookings all day, against thirty next Saturday.

Nothing on any drive. If you have been saving the long ride, run or walk, this is the day the weather and the calendar finally agree.

Tue Sep 8 – Wed Sep 9 — the quiet midweek

Tuesday holds the Public Works Picnic at the Delacorte, 5–6 PM. Wednesday brings a Public Art Fund opening at Doris C. Freedman Plaza 6–7 PM and evening basketball at James Weldon Johnson Playground 6:30–10:30 PM. Cedar Hill closes all day Wednesday and stays out through Friday.

Sunny and low-80s both days, and nothing else to work around.

Thu Sep 10, 6–8 PM — New Dendrology opens at the Arsenal

The opening reception for New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery — a show about trees, free — is the one event this week that five of your ten personas want. It also happens to fall on the hottest, wettest evening of the week at 87°, which is the second argument for being indoors. The gallery is open Friday 9 AM–5 PM.

Fri Sep 11 — remembrance at East Meadow

The WTC Mental Health 9/11 National Day of Remembrance Gathering holds East Meadow 11 AM–1:30 PM. Bowling Green is closed for maintenance until 2 PM. The weather breaks: 79° and mostly sunny.

Sat Sep 12 — the fullest day in a month

Marcus King Band with Penelope Road takes Rumsey Playfield 7–10 PM — the first announced SummerStage show since the season paused. Before it, the day is stacked:

  Birding Basics, 10 AM at Belvedere Castle — fall migration is underway.
  Chess lecture and simul with IM Kassa Korley, 11 AM at the Chess and Checkers House — he plays up to thirty people at once.
  Conservatory Garden Tour, 11 AM, behind the scenes with the garden staff.
  Seneca Village Tour, 2 PM from Mariners’ Gate.
  Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs, 9 AM–3 PM; UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 9 AM–7 PM.
  That Guitar Man from Central Park at Hernshead, noon–6 PM; tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM.

East Meadow is closed all day, and thirty private ceremony bookings are on the board — the heaviest single day we’ve seen this season. The scenic south-end spots are spoken for.

Sun Sep 13 — Young Thug, folkdancers, pollinators

Young Thug with NAV closes the weekend at Rumsey, 8–10 PM. Earlier: the Summer Pollinator Walk leaves Boys’ Gate at 10 AM near the end of its season, International Sunday takes the Great Hill Oval 10 AM–2 PM, a Celtic Harp Circle sits at Cop Cot noon–2 PM, and the International Folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM. East Meadow closed a second day.

Steady all week

  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain — an all-day permit titled only “Closed,” every day again. That is now fourteen consecutive days with no recorded reason.
  Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings, meeting at Strawberry Fields this week, 7:30 and 8:30.
  Lawn maintenance: East 106th Street Mon–Thu, Cedar Hill Wed–Fri, Bowling Green Friday morning, East Meadow both weekend days.
  144 field permits — roughly ninety on the Great Lawn, 34 at Heckscher, 17 at North Meadow. 79 private bookings, thirty of them on Saturday.
