Central Park, Sep 7–13: SummerStage returns for two nights, and a chess master takes on thirty players at once

        A correction first: the email that reached you earlier today covered Sep 5–11, two days of which had already gone by. This is the right one — Monday the 7th through Sunday the 13th. Sorry for the second message.

A slow week that ends in a rush. Monday is a nearly empty Labor Day, the midweek is three quiet evenings, and then Saturday arrives with a chess master playing thirty people at once, three Conservancy tours, a guitar man at Hernshead and the Marcus King Band at Rumsey. SummerStage is back after two weeks of empty permits, with a second show on Sunday.

Weather this week

Sunny and 79° for Labor Day, clear low-80s Tuesday and Wednesday, a hot and showery 87° Thursday, then a comfortable 79–80° and sunny Friday and Saturday. Both concert nights and all of Saturday’s daytime programming fall in good weather; Thursday is the day to be indoors, which is conveniently when the Arsenal opens its new show.

Mon Sep 7 — Labor Day, and two permits in the whole park

Central Park Skate Circle runs at Dead Road North 2–7 PM, and the Public Works Picnic rain date sits at the Delacorte 5–6 PM. That is the entire board. The skate circle on a sunny 79° holiday afternoon is the reliable free show.

Tue Sep 8 – Wed Sep 9 — picnic, public art, evening basketball

The Public Works Picnic takes the Delacorte Tuesday 5–6 PM. Wednesday brings a Public Art Fund opening at Doris C. Freedman Plaza 6–7 PM and basketball at James Weldon Johnson Playground 6:30–10:30 PM. Cedar Hill closes all day Wednesday through Friday.

Thu Sep 10, 6–8 PM — New Dendrology opens at the Arsenal Gallery

The opening reception for New Dendrology — a show about trees, at the Arsenal, free — is the week’s headline for four of your interests at once, and it lands on the hottest evening of the week at 87°. Indoors is the right place to be Thursday. The gallery opens Friday 9 AM–5 PM if the reception doesn’t suit.

Fri Sep 11 — remembrance at East Meadow

The WTC Mental Health 9/11 National Day of Remembrance Gathering holds East Meadow 11 AM–1:30 PM. Bowling Green is closed for maintenance until 2 PM, and the weather breaks to a mild 79°.

Sat Sep 12 — the fullest day in a month

Marcus King Band with Penelope Road takes Rumsey Playfield 7–10 PM — SummerStage’s first announced show since the season paused, and worth planning the evening around.

The day ahead of it is dense:

  Chess lecture and simul with IM Kassa Korley, 11 AM at the Chess and Checkers House. He teaches, then plays up to thirty people simultaneously — the best free spectacle of the week for a family.
  Birding Basics at Belvedere Castle, 10 AM, with fall migration underway.
  Conservatory Garden Tour at 11 AM, and the Seneca Village Tour at 2 PM from Mariners’ Gate.
  Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs, 9 AM–3 PM. UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 9 AM–7 PM.
  That Guitar Man from Central Park at Hernshead, noon–6 PM, and Santa’s Knights and Gladiators on the lawn behind the Met, noon–4 PM.
  Tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM.

East Meadow is closed all day, and thirty private ceremony bookings — the heaviest day of the season — have the scenic spots spoken for.

Sun Sep 13 — folkdancers, harp at Cop Cot, and Young Thug

Young Thug with NAV closes the weekend at Rumsey, 8–10 PM.

Earlier and gentler: International Sunday on the Great Hill Oval 10 AM–2 PM, a Celtic Harp Circle at Cop Cot noon–2 PM, the International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM, and the Summer Pollinator Walk from Boys’ Gate at 10 AM, near the end of its season.

Steady all week

  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain sits under an all-day permit titled only “Closed” every day again — fourteen consecutive days, no reason recorded anywhere.
  Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five mornings, from Strawberry Fields this week, 7:30 and 8:30.
  CP Sports Summer Program at South Dead Road, Tuesday through Friday.
  144 field permits across the week — roughly ninety on the Great Lawn, 34 at Heckscher, 17 at North Meadow. North Meadow is back up from five last week; the leagues have not finished after all.
