Central Park, Sep 5–11: a second clear week on the drives, a perfect Labor Day, and Bethesda Terrace closed all seven days

        Two things define this week. The drives are clear again — no race, no charity walk, no permit on East, West or Center Drive on any of the seven days, which makes it the second straight fully open week and the longest clear stretch since June. And Bethesda Terrace and Fountain sits under an all-day permit titled only “Closed” every single day, Saturday through Friday. Labor Day Monday looks like the best weather of the month so far.

Weather this week

Saturday is sunny and 81° with a slight shower chance overnight, Sunday cools to a bright 75°, and Labor Day lands sunny at 78° — then the heat rebuilds to 83° Tuesday and Wednesday and 85° Thursday, with the best rain chance Wednesday night. Take the weekend and Monday at face value and front-load anything hard into the mornings from Tuesday on; the NWS forecast doesn’t reach Friday the 11th yet.

Sat Sep 5 — the busiest civilian day, and a SummerStage permit with nothing behind it

There is an all-day SummerStage permit at Rumsey Playfield again, and again no lineup appears anywhere in our sources. We flagged the same thing last week; the next announced show is still Marcus King Band on Sep 12. Read Saturday’s permit as a hold or load-in.

Everything else is real and worth the trip:

  Summer Pollinator Walk, 10 AM from Boys’ Gate — the butterfly garden, near the end of its season.
  Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM.
  UnityMarketsNY at Farmers’ Gate, 110th and Lenox, 9 AM–7 PM.
  Iconic Views Tour, 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.
  Barefoot Shakespeare at Summit Rock, 3–8 PM (their permit title still says “August 2026” — the date is right, the title is stale).
  Tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM.

East Meadow is closed all day. Seventeen private ceremony bookings are on the board — the heaviest day of the week — so Ladies’ Pavilion, Cop Cot and Wagner Cove are spoken for.

Sun Sep 6 — birding at Belvedere, folkdancers at King Jagiello

Birding Basics Tour meets at Belvedere Castle at 10 AM. Fall migration is the reason to take it now rather than in a month.

5 Element Meditation opens the day quietly at Cherry Hill, 8–9 AM. The International Folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM, Barefoot Shakespeare repeats at Summit Rock 3–8 PM, and End Insurance Apartheid — the event formerly known as Rap Against Rikers — takes Bandshell Plaza noon–6 PM, which is the day’s crowd. East Meadow is closed for a second day.

Mon Sep 7 — Labor Day, and the best weather on the board

Sunny, 78°, nothing on the drives, and almost nothing permitted anywhere. Central Park Skate Circle runs at Dead Road North 2–7 PM, and the Public Works Picnic rain date sits at the Delacorte 5–6 PM. Only two private bookings all day.

If you have been waiting for a long ride, a long run or a long walk, this is the day the calendar and the forecast finally agree.

Tue Sep 8 – Wed Sep 9 — the quiet midweek

Tuesday holds the Public Works Picnic at the Delacorte, 5–6 PM. Wednesday brings a Public Art Fund opening at Doris C. Freedman Plaza, 6–7 PM, and evening basketball at James Weldon Johnson Playground, 6:30–10:30 PM. Cedar Hill closes all day Wednesday and stays closed through Friday.

Otherwise these are empty days with rebuilding heat — 83° both afternoons, showers most likely Wednesday night.

Thu Sep 10, 6–8 PM — New Dendrology opens at the Arsenal

The opening reception for New Dendrology at the Arsenal Gallery is the single event this week that five of your ten personas want — art, trees and free, indoors on the warmest evening of the week at 85°. The show itself is open Friday 9 AM–5 PM.

A second unannounced SummerStage permit sits on Thursday, same as Saturday’s.

Fri Sep 11 — remembrance at East Meadow

The WTC Mental Health 9/11 National Day of Remembrance Gathering is at East Meadow, 11 AM–1:30 PM. Bowling Green is closed for maintenance until 2 PM.

Steady all week

  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain — an all-day permit titled only “Closed,” every day Saturday through Friday. The permit gives no reason and we can’t find one; if you were planning to photograph the Terrace this week, plan around it.
  Bird Watching with Birding Bob — five days from Loeb Boathouse, 7:30 and 8:30 AM.
  Columbus Circle Food Market at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM–9 PM.
  Lawn maintenance: East 106th Street Mon–Thu, Cedar Hill Wed–Fri, Bowling Green Friday morning, East Meadow both weekend days.
  105 field permits — about seventy on the Great Lawn, 24 at Heckscher, 5 at North Meadow, 3 on the tennis courts. 66 private bookings, heaviest Saturday (17), Sunday and Wednesday (12 each).
