Central Park, Sep 5–11: a second clear week on the road, and a Labor Day made for the long one

Nothing on the drives again — seven more days with no race, no charity walk and no permit touching East, West or Center Drive. That is two clear weeks back to back, the longest open stretch since June, and Labor Day Monday arrives sunny and 78° with almost nothing else on the calendar. If you have been saving a long effort, Monday is the day.

Weather this week

Sunny and 81° Saturday, a cooler and brighter 75° Sunday, then a sunny 78° on Labor Day before the heat rebuilds to the low 80s Tuesday and Wednesday and 85° Thursday, with the week’s best rain chance Wednesday night. Ride or run long across the weekend and Monday while the air is easy, and go early Tuesday onward — the forecast doesn’t reach Friday yet.

Sat Sep 5, 10 AM — Summer Pollinator Walk from Boys’ Gate

The Summer Pollinator Walk leaves Boys’ Gate at 10 for the secret butterfly garden. The summer flowers are at the end of their run, so this is close to the last good weekend for it. The Iconic Views tour follows at 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.

Nothing on the road, but the park is busy on foot: Unity Markets at Farmers’ Gate 9 AM–7 PM, model yachts at Kerbs Boathouse until 3, and tango at the Shakespeare Statue 6–9 PM — the last is a good thing to walk past on the Mall. East Meadow is closed all day, and Saturday carries seventeen private ceremony bookings, the week’s heaviest: Ladies’ Pavilion, Cop Cot and Wagner Cove are all spoken for if you were headed there for the quiet.

Sun Sep 6, 10 AM — Birding Basics at Belvedere Castle

Birding Basics meets at Belvedere Castle. Fall migration has started and the Ramble is filling with birds moving south — this is the tour that teaches you to find them rather than just hear them.

Bandshell Plaza holds a rally from noon to 6 PM and the International Folkdancers have King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM, so the Mall and the 72nd Street approaches carry pedestrian traffic all afternoon. Worth knowing on a bike; not worth avoiding. East Meadow closed a second day.

Mon Sep 7 — Labor Day: clear road, empty calendar, 78° and sunny

Two permits in the entire park, neither near a drive. This is the best combination of weather and open road the park has offered in months. Take the long ride or the long run, and take it whenever you like — there is no crowd window to work around.

Tue Sep 8 – Thu Sep 10 — three empty days and rebuilding heat

Nothing on the drives, nothing on a path you use. The only closures are lawns: Cedar Hill goes out all day Wednesday and stays closed through Friday, East 106th Street lawn is out Monday through Thursday. None of it changes a route.

The limiter is the air — 83°, 83°, then 85° Thursday, with showers most likely Wednesday night. These are dawn days again.

Thursday evening offers the one indoor option: the New Dendrology opening reception at the Arsenal Gallery, 6–8 PM, free — an exhibition about trees, which is the right show for this list.

Fri Sep 11 — remembrance at East Meadow, Bowling Green out until 2

The WTC Mental Health 9/11 National Day of Remembrance Gathering is at East Meadow, 11 AM–1:30 PM. Bowling Green is closed for maintenance until 2 PM. Neither touches the loop.

Steady all week

Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is under an all-day permit titled only “Closed” — every day this week, Saturday through Friday. The permit gives no reason and we could not find one. If the Terrace is on your walking line or your photograph list, assume it isn’t available.

Bird Watching with Birding Bob runs five mornings from Loeb Boathouse at 7:30 and 8:30, $10 at the end of the walk.
