Central Park, Aug 31–Sep 6: Samara Joy and Christian McBride free at Rumsey, and the first week since June with nothing on the drives

        Summer’s permits are finally off the road. There is not a single race, charity walk or loop closure between Monday and Sunday — the first clean week since June — and the one unmissable thing on the calendar is free: Samara Joy and Christian McBride at Rumsey Playfield on Wednesday night. What the park is doing this week is repairing itself, with six lawns closed for post-summer restoration.

Weather this week

Warm and sticky all seven days with a thunderstorm chance on most of them, peaking Tuesday at 85° and Thursday at 86°, before a northwest wind dries things out Friday and hands you a mostly sunny 79° Saturday. Nights slide into the 60s by the weekend, so the early mornings are the good hours — and Wednesday’s outdoor concert is the one evening worth watching the radar for.

Mon Aug 31 — a choir at the Bandshell

Xinsheng Chinese Choir sings at Bandshell Plaza 6–7:30 PM, which is a pleasant thing to walk into on a humid Monday evening. Earlier, Cherry Hill is closed until 2 PM and there’s a kids’ launch event at Mariners’ Playground 9 AM–12:30 PM. Nothing anywhere near the drives.

Tue Sep 1 – Thu Sep 3 — the quiet middle, and the lawns come out of service

Three days with almost nothing scheduled and the hottest air of the week. This is where the maintenance story sits: Bowling Green closed all day Tuesday, The Dairy lawn Wednesday and Thursday, Levin Playground’s lawns Thursday and Friday, and East 72nd Street Playground Tuesday through Friday. None of it touches a running or riding line — it’s the Conservancy putting the summer lawns back together after Labor Day.

The CP Sports Summer Program runs at South Dead Road Tuesday through Friday, morning and afternoon sessions, if you have a kid to occupy. The Columbus Circle Food Market sets up at Merchants’ Gate Thursday through Saturday, 9:30 AM–9 PM.

Wed Sep 2, 7–10 PM — Samara Joy and Christian McBride, free, Rumsey Playfield

The week’s event. SummerStage marks Verve’s 70th anniversary with Samara Joy — six-time GRAMMY winner, Bronx native — and Christian McBride, an eleven-time GRAMMY bassist who has recorded with McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea on one side and Sting and Paul McCartney on the other. Mei Semones & Friends play Getz/Gilberto and Sparklmami DJs.

It’s free and it’s a Wednesday, which means the line forms early and the field fills. There’s a slight storm chance that evening — go anyway, but don’t bring anything that can’t get wet.

Fri Sep 4, 10 AM — Birding Basics at Belvedere Castle

The Conservancy’s Birding Basics Tour meets at Belvedere Castle, and fall migration is exactly why you’d take it now. Friday is also the first genuinely comfortable day of the week — drier air, northwest wind.

Barefoot Shakespeare plays Summit Rock Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 3–8 PM. The Conservancy’s Iconic Views tour runs those same three days at 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.

Sat Sep 5 — the fullest day of the week

Mostly sunny and 79°, and something on nearly every surface:

  Summer Pollinator Walk, 10 AM from Boys’ Gate — the secret butterfly garden, worth it while the summer flowers hold.
  Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM. Conservatory Water on a clear Saturday is the best free hour in the park with a kid.
  Unity Markets at Farmers’ Gate, 110th and Lenox, 9 AM–7 PM.
  Tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM — dancing on the Mall as the light goes.

There’s a SummerStage permit open at Rumsey all day Saturday, but no lineup is announced in any of our sources — treat it as a hold, not a show.

Sun Sep 6 — folkdancing at King Jagiello

Central Park International Folkdancers take King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM, which is the reliable, slightly hypnotic Sunday fixture up by the Turtle Pond. Birding Basics runs again at 10 AM.

Steady all week

East Meadow is closed Monday through Friday for restoration and again both weekend days — the longest closure on the board this week. The East 106th Street lawn is out Monday through Thursday.

Bird Watching with Birding Bob — new to this email, and the densest guided birding in the park. Monday, Thursday and Friday at 8:30 AM, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 and 9:30. Meet at Strawberry Fields Monday, Conservatory Garden Friday, the Boathouse on the weekend. $10, paid at the end.

Ball fields: 133 permits across the week — 63 on the Great Lawn, 28 at Heckscher, 23 at North Meadow. A completely normal late-summer load.
