Central Park, Aug 31–Sep 6: Samara Joy and Christian McBride free at Rumsey Wednesday, and a Saturday with something on every lawn
One free concert this week is worth rearranging an evening for: Samara Joy and Christian McBride play Rumsey Playfield on Wednesday night for SummerStage’s Verve anniversary show. Around it sits a quiet, humid week in which the park is mostly busy repairing itself — six lawns closed for post-Labor-Day restoration — and then a Saturday with something happening almost everywhere.
Weather this week
Warm and sticky all week with a daily thunderstorm chance, topping out at 85° Tuesday and 86° Thursday before a northwest wind clears it Friday into a mostly sunny 79° Saturday. Wednesday evening carries a slight storm chance right at concert time, so bring something light to sit on rather than anything that minds getting wet.
Mon Aug 31 — a choir at the Bandshell
The Xinsheng Chinese Choir sings at Bandshell Plaza 6–7:30 PM — an easy, free hour on a humid Monday. Earlier there’s a kids’ launch event at Mariners’ Playground, 9 AM–12:30 PM, and Cherry Hill is closed until 2 PM.
Tue Sep 1 – Thu Sep 3 — the lawns come out of service
The quiet middle of the week, and where the maintenance is: Bowling Green closed Tuesday, The Dairy lawn Wednesday and Thursday, Levin Playground Thursday and Friday, East 72nd Street Playground Tuesday through Friday, East 106th Street lawn Monday through Thursday. This is the Conservancy’s annual post-summer lawn restoration, and it’s worth knowing before you carry a picnic to one of them.
For families, the CP Sports Summer Program runs at South Dead Road Tuesday through Friday, morning and afternoon. The Columbus Circle Food Market opens at Merchants’ Gate Thursday through Saturday, 9:30 AM–9 PM.
Wed Sep 2, 7–10 PM — Samara Joy and Christian McBride, free at Rumsey
The week’s event. SummerStage celebrates Verve’s 70th with Samara Joy, a six-time GRAMMY winner from the Bronx, and Christian McBride, the eleven-time GRAMMY bassist who has played with McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea as readily as with Sting and Paul McCartney. Mei Semones & Friends play the music of Getz/Gilberto, and Sparklmami DJs.
Free, outdoors, on a Wednesday — the line forms well before doors and the field fills.
Fri Sep 4 — birding at Belvedere, Shakespeare at Summit Rock
The Conservancy’s Birding Basics Tour meets 10 AM at Belvedere Castle, timed to the start of fall migration.
Barefoot Shakespeare opens a three-day run at Summit Rock, 3–8 PM Friday through Sunday — outdoor, free, and the most reliably good theater in the park right now. The Iconic Views tour also runs all three days at 2 PM from Doris C. Freedman Plaza.
Sat Sep 5 — the fullest day of the week
Mostly sunny and 79°, and the calendar is stacked:
- Model Yacht Racing at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM–3 PM — Conservatory Water at its best, and free.
- Summer Pollinator Walk, 10 AM from Boys’ Gate, through the secret butterfly garden.
- Unity Markets at Farmers’ Gate, 110th and Lenox, 9 AM–7 PM.
- Tango at the Shakespeare Statue, 6–9 PM on the Mall.
A SummerStage permit is open at Rumsey all day Saturday but no lineup appears in any of our sources — a hold rather than a show. East Meadow is closed.
Sun Sep 6 — folkdancers at King Jagiello
The International Folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM–6 PM, up by the Turtle Pond — the most watchable standing Sunday fixture in the park. Birding Basics runs again at 10 AM, and Barefoot Shakespeare plays its final Summit Rock show.
Steady all week
East Meadow is closed Monday through Friday and both weekend days — the longest closure on the board.
Bird Watching with Birding Bob is new to this email: five days a week, Monday, Thursday and Friday at 8:30 AM, weekends at 7:30 and 9:30. Strawberry Fields Monday, Conservatory Garden Friday, the Boathouse Saturday and Sunday. $10, paid at the end.
Ball fields: 133 permits across the week — 63 on the Great Lawn, 28 at Heckscher, 23 at North Meadow. A normal late-summer load, and a reason the Great Lawn will be busy every evening.
