Central Park, Aug 17–23: five clean loop mornings, then a sold-out 10K holds the drives till noon Saturday
Five straight mornings with nothing on the drives, and then Saturday takes the whole first half of the day — the NYRR Grete’s Great Gallop 10K holds both drives and the Center Loop from 7:30 AM until noon. Plan the week around that one Saturday block and everything else falls into place.
Weather this week
Monday is wet with thunderstorms, then Tuesday and Wednesday go clear and hot — 85° and 87°, the week’s peak — before storms return Thursday and the weekend turns showery. Get your long efforts done Tuesday and Wednesday at dawn while the air is dry, and treat Monday as a bridle-path day rather than a lost one.
Mon Aug 17 — wet start, quiet drives
Thunderstorms through the day at 83°. Nothing on the loop. Lawn work closes the East 106th Street lawn all day and the Wild West Playground lawn until 2 PM — neither touches running or riding lines. Bill Popp and the Tapes plays Bandshell Plaza 5–7 PM if you’re walking through the evening.
Tue Aug 18 – Wed Aug 20 — the two good mornings
Clear and hot both days, 85° then 87°. These are the week’s best loop mornings — no permits on the drives either day, and no crowd pressure at Columbus Circle or the 72nd Street Cross Drive. Go early: by mid-morning Wednesday the heat is the limiting factor, not the traffic.
Bowling Green and the East 106th Street lawn are both closed all day Tuesday. Off-route for everyone reading this.
Thu Aug 20 — nothing scheduled
No one-off permits anywhere in the park. Storms and 81°. If the rain holds off, this is the emptiest the park gets all week.
Fri Aug 21 — pollinators at Boys’ Gate
Summer Pollinator Walk meets 11 AM at Boys’ Gate — the Conservancy’s walk through the secret butterfly garden and the summer flowers around it. Worth booking if you want the quiet end of the park with someone who can name what you’re looking at.
Later: Rubyboo Entertainment Music Festival takes Bandshell Plaza 3–8 PM, and the Public Theater’s picnic runs at the Delacorte 5:30–8 PM. Both mean foot traffic around the Bandshell and the Great Lawn’s south edge in the evening — a crowd heads-up, not a detour.
Sat Aug 22, 7:30 AM–12 PM — Grete’s Great Gallop holds the loop
The loop is unusable for the whole morning. The permit covers West Drive, East Drive, the Center Loop, the 72nd Street Cross Drive and Bandshell Plaza from 7:30 AM to noon — the hours past the finish are the post-race festival at the Bandshell, so the road does not come back at 10.
Run or ride before 7 AM or after noon, or take the Bridle Path or the Reservoir track and leave the drives alone. If you’re driving to the park, the 72nd Street Cross Drive is inside the permit.
It’s an NYRR members-only race and it’s sold out with a full standby list, so this is a spectating morning unless you already have a bib. It runs Grete Waitz’s old Mini 10K course — she won five titles on it and set world records on it in 1979 and 1980.
Also Saturday, away from the drives: the Ramble Woodland Walk and the Conservatory Garden Tour both start at 11 AM — either one is a good use of the morning while the road is closed. East Meadow is closed all day for restoration.
Sun Aug 23 — the loop is yours again
Drives are clear. East Meadow stays closed a second day. Summer Pollinator Walk runs again at 11 AM, and the Ray Delgado Project plays the Dana Discovery Center at the Harlem Meer at 2 PM — a good excuse to finish long at the north end. Showers are likely; 83°.
