Central Park Sports This Week: Aug 3 – Aug 9 — CRCA crit racing Sunday dawn, 71 ball games Thursday, yachts Saturday

Hi sports fans — Thursday is the biggest field day of the week with 71 softball and T-ball permits across the three main diamonds, Sunday brings the CRCA peloton back to East Drive before dawn, and Saturday has model yacht racing on Conservatory Water for anyone who wants a sport that runs on wind. Two maintenance days take fields offline; here’s what’s out and when.

Weather this week

A wet 81°F Monday, a clear 83°F Tuesday, then a build through 82°F Wednesday and 87°F Thursday into three straight 88°F days Friday through Sunday, with afternoon storm cells most days. Monday’s games are the ones at risk of a call; Thursday through Sunday the heat is the story, and late-afternoon slots on the open diamonds at North Meadow and Great Lawn will be brutal.

Mon Aug 3 — 53 games, and the weather may take some of them

Showers and thunderstorms most of the day at 81°F. 53 softball and T-ball permits, plus a kickball and a baseball slot, spread across North Meadow, Great Lawn and Heckscher. Two soccer training blocks at Levin Playground and South Dead Road. The East 72nd Street Playground Lawn is closed for maintenance and East 106th Street Lawn is closed all week — East 106th stays out Monday through Thursday. Expect calls on the morning slots if the cells come through early.

Tue Aug 4 — 54 games, youth tennis, and the Bowling Greens go dark

83°F and sunny, the best playing conditions of the week. 54 softball and T-ball permits, two soccer blocks, a kickball and a baseball. Youth tennis has three court blocks 1 to 4 PM. Two closures: the Bowling Greens are closed all day for maintenance, so lawn bowling and croquet are out entirely, and the East 102nd Street Landscape is closed all day — worth knowing if your division uses the Clay Oval area. Come out for the tennis if nothing else; the 1 PM start under a clear sky is the nicest slot of the week.

Wed Aug 5 — 50 games, and the lightest calendar anywhere

82°F with a shower chance. 50 softball and T-ball permits, three soccer, three baseball, two kickball. Nothing closed but the East 106th lawn. This is the quietest day in the park overall, which for field play means parking, benches and the good backstops are all available for once.

Thu Aug 6 — the peak: 71 permits across three fields

87°F, storms possible late. 71 softball and T-ball permits — the busiest day of the week by a wide margin — plus two soccer, two baseball and a kickball. North Meadow, Great Lawn and Heckscher are all full from morning. Youth tennis again, three blocks 1 to 4 PM. If you’re a spectator, the Great Lawn diamonds are the ones to walk between; if you’re playing an evening slot, note that Rumsey has a large free concert at 8 and the 72nd Street entrance is jammed from 6, so allow extra time out.

Fri Aug 7 — 44 games, and the heat sets in

88°F, mostly sunny. 44 softball and T-ball permits, two baseball, two soccer, two kickball. No closures. Nothing else competing for space. The 88°F is the thing — the Great Lawn diamonds have almost no shade and the North Meadow benches have none at all.

Sat Aug 8 — East Meadow closed, and yacht racing at nine

88°F. East Meadow is closed all day, which takes it off the board for pickup entirely. On the diamonds: 34 softball and T-ball, five baseball, three kickball — a lighter weekend than the weekdays. The event worth turning out for is model yacht racing at Kerbs Boathouse on Conservatory Water, 9 AM to 3 PM — the Central Park Model Yacht Club has been sailing that basin since the 1870s and the racing is genuinely competitive. The skate circle runs at Dead Road North 2 to 7 PM.

Sun Aug 9, 4–8:30 AM — CRCA Central Park Racing Series on East Drive

The permit holds East Drive from 4:00 to 8:30 AM — club crit racing, the same series that ran last Sunday, with fields going off in the dark and finishing in early light. It’s the only road event of the week and the best free bike racing in the city if you’re willing to be at the north end at five in the morning. Afterward: 45 softball and T-ball permits, seven baseball, three kickball, with East Meadow closed again all day. Skate circle repeats 2 to 7 at Dead Road North.
