Central Park Family Plans: Aug 3 – Aug 9 — free movies Monday, model yachts and storytelling Saturday

Hi families — three easy wins this week, all free: movies on the Great Lawn Monday night, storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue Saturday morning, and model yacht racing at Kerbs Boathouse right after it. The heat builds toward the weekend, so front-load anything that means standing in the sun.

Monday is wet at 81°F, Tuesday clears to a lovely 83°F, then it warms steadily — 82°F Wednesday, 87°F Thursday and 88°F Friday through Sunday, with afternoon thunderstorm chances most days. Plan outdoor mornings and indoor or shaded afternoons from Thursday on; the Arsenal’s free photography exhibit is air-conditioned and open 9 to 5 every day of the week.

Mon Aug 3, 7 PM — free movies on the Great Lawn

81°F with showers and storms much of the day, which may or may not clear by curtain. Free movies run 7 to 10 PM on the Great Lawn — bring a blanket, get there by 6:30 for a decent patch, and check the sky before you commit. Elsewhere, the East 72nd Street Playground Lawn is closed for maintenance today and East 106th Street Lawn is closed Monday through Thursday, so if either of those is your usual, pick another. Summer camps are running at East Meadow, Rudin Playground Lawn and West 96th Street — busy but self-contained.

Tue Aug 4 — a great day out, and a concert you can bring kids to

83°F and sunny, the nicest day of the seven. Naumburg Orchestral Concerts play the Bandshell at 7:30, free — an hour and a half of baroque music outdoors, no tickets, and blankets on the grass are the norm. It’s a genuinely kid-friendly first concert if you sit toward the back where wandering is fine. Earlier, National Night Out Against Crime runs 2 to 6 PM at Merchants’ Gate, which is a Columbus Circle street-fair sort of afternoon. Youth tennis has the courts 1 to 4.

Wed Aug 5 — the quiet day, and the playgrounds are all open

82°F with a shower chance. The lightest day on the calendar — no playground closures anywhere, no big permits, nothing drawing crowds. Universal Kids Soccer has the East 106th Street Lawn 9 to noon. If you’ve been waiting for a day when Heckscher and the Adventure Playground aren’t mobbed, this is it.

Thu Aug 6 — the food market opens, and free music on the Great Lawn

87°F, storms possible. The Columbus Circle food market opens at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM to 9 PM, running Thursday through Saturday — easy dinner if you’re already in the park. Free concerts on the Great Lawn, 7 to 10 PM. Over at Rumsey, Andrew Bird plays a free 8 PM show that will draw a large adult crowd, so expect the 72nd Street entrance to be slow from 6 — worth knowing if you’re heading home that way with a stroller. Thursday is also the busiest field day of the week, with 71 youth and adult ball permits across North Meadow, Great Lawn and Heckscher.

Fri Aug 7 — a pollinator walk built for curious kids

88°F, hot and mostly sunny. The Conservancy’s Summer Pollinator Walk leaves Boys’ Gate at 11 — bees, butterflies, and a naturalist who’ll answer the fifteenth question as patiently as the first. Food market again at Merchants’ Gate. Otherwise a light day: camps, soccer training, and the Arsenal exhibit if the heat wins.

Sat Aug 8 — the big one: yachts at nine, stories at ten

88°F. Two things to build the morning around. Model yacht racing at Kerbs Boathouse on Conservatory Water, 9 AM to 3 PM — captains are happy to explain the boats, and there’s shade on the east side of the basin. Storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue, 10 AM to 1 PM, which is a fifteen-minute walk from Kerbs and the natural second stop. After that: Unity Markets at Farmers’ Gate 9 to 7, the food market at Merchants’ Gate, and the skate circle at Dead Road North from 2 to 7 if anyone in your group is old enough to want to watch. East Meadow is closed all day. Go early — by noon it’s 88°F and the park is at its fullest of the summer.

Sun Aug 9 — the Harlem Meer, all day and mostly shaded

88°F with storms building. Summer on the Harlem Meer runs 9 AM to 6 PM at the Dana Discovery Center — the best family day the north end offers, with the water right there and Uptown Royalty performing free at 2. The folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 to 8, which kids either love immediately or watch from a safe distance. Pollinator walk repeats at 11 from Boys’ Gate. Skate circle again 2 to 7. East Meadow closed.
