Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Aug 3 – Aug 9 — CRCA owns East Drive Sunday dawn, and that's the whole list
Hi cyclists — a rare week where the drives are clean six days out of seven. The one exception is Sunday morning, when the CRCA series takes East Drive from 4 to 8:30 AM. Around that, the story is heat: mid-80s midweek climbing to 88°F Friday through Sunday, with afternoon storm cells most days.
Weather this week
A wet 81°F Monday gives way to a genuinely good 83°F Tuesday, then the heat stacks up — 82°F Wednesday, 87°F Thursday, 88°F Friday, Saturday and Sunday, each with a thunderstorm chance after midday. Take your long ride Tuesday morning while it’s still civil; from Thursday on, roll out by 6 and be off the loop before the sun clears the East Side buildings.
Mon Aug 3 — wet, greasy, and completely unpermitted
Showers and thunderstorms most of the day at 81°F. Nothing is staged on any drive. The only permits are lawn maintenance at East 106th Street and the East 72nd Street Playground Lawn, neither of which touches the road. Expect standing water at the low points on the east side and take the descents off Harlem Hill with some respect — the surface holds oil after a dry stretch, and it’s been dry.
Tue Aug 4 — the week’s best riding, and a Bandshell crowd after 6:30
83°F and mostly sunny. Clear drives, low wind out of the northeast at 0–5 mph. This is your day for a real effort. Two footnotes that don’t take road but do put people at the crossings: the Naumburg concert at Bandshell Plaza fills the Mall from around 6:30 for a 7:30 downbeat, and National Night Out runs 2–6 PM at Merchants’ Gate — Columbus Circle is thick in that window if you enter or exit there. The Bowling Greens and East 102nd Street Landscape are closed for maintenance, both off-road.
Wed Aug 5 — nothing on the calendar at all
82°F with a scattered storm chance. The lightest permit day of the week anywhere in the park — no closures on the drives, no staging areas taken, nothing at the gates. If Tuesday gets rained out, this is the backup, and it’s nearly as good.
Thu Aug 6 — clear road, congested corners after 6
87°F. Drives open all day. The pressure shifts to the entrances in the evening: Andrew Bird plays a free show at Rumsey Playfield at 8, which is the biggest draw of the week and pushes spectators through the 72nd Street entrance from about 6. The Columbus Circle food market opens its Thursday-to-Saturday run at Merchants’ Gate, 9:30 AM to 9 PM — that corner is slow all three days. If you ride evenings, come in at Engineers’ Gate and stay north.
Fri Aug 7 — 88°F, second free night at Rumsey
Mostly sunny, hot, storms possible after dark. No road events. Funk Flex’s Birthday R&B Picnic takes Rumsey at 7, same free admission and the same 72nd Street pinch from 5:30. Food market again at Merchants’ Gate. Ride early: 5:57 sunrise and it’s the last morning of the week with tolerable air.
Sat Aug 8 — open drives, but the park is at capacity from 9
88°F. Nothing permitted on the road, which is unusual for an August Saturday — but everything else is happening. Markets at Farmers’ Gate and Merchants’ Gate, model yacht racing at Kerbs from 9, two Conservancy tours stepping off at 11, the skate circle at Dead Road North from 2 to 7, and 31 private bookings spread across the scenic spots. Pedestrian volume at the crossings is the highest it gets all week. Loop before 8 and it’s a different park.
Sun Aug 9, 4–8:30 AM — CRCA Central Park Racing Series, East Drive
The permit covers East Drive from 4:00 to 8:30 AM. If you’re racing, you know the drill. If you’re not, the north end has a fast, tight bunch on it in the dark and the early light and you should not be doing intervals into it — ride the west side, or wait until 8:30 and accept that you’re then riding into 88°F with storms building. The rest of the day is clean road. Folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza 11 AM to 8 PM and the skate circle runs again 2 to 7 at Dead Road North, both pedestrian-only concerns near the 72nd Street area.
