Central Park Walking Plans: Jul 31 – Aug 6 — Bethesda Terrace closes for the month, and Saturday is the full-calendar day

Hi walkers — the headline is a subtraction: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is closed for all of August, so the park’s best gathering place is off your route until September. The compensation is a Saturday stacked with things worth stopping for — storytelling at the Andersen statue, model yachts on Conservatory Water, guitar at Hernshead, tango at dusk — and a Tuesday-evening Naumburg concert at the Bandshell.

Weather this week

The weekend is the dry half — 86°F and sunny Saturday, 83°F and cloudy Sunday — and then storms come in Sunday night, Monday is wet through the day, and Tuesday to Thursday stay humid in the mid-80s with afternoon thunderstorm chances. Do your long, unhurried walks Saturday and Sunday morning; Monday belongs to the Ramble and the North Woods, where the canopy takes the edge off the rain and the Loch actually runs after a soak.

Fri Jul 31 — two Conservancy tours, and the Terrace goes behind fencing

The Iconic Views tour leaves Columbus Circle at 10 AM, and the Activism in Central Park tour meets at Women’s Gate at 11 ($33, 20% off for members) — the second is the one that reads the park as a protest ground rather than a landscape. The Columbus Circle food market runs 9:30 AM to 9 PM at Merchants’ Gate. Plan around the Terrace closure starting today: for the same sit-and-watch feeling, Cherry Hill and the Ladies’ Pavilion are the closest substitutes on the west side, and Wagner Cove if you want quiet.

Sat Aug 1 — the full-calendar day, west side to east

86°F, sunny, almost no wind — and the busiest, best day of the week to wander with no fixed plan. In rough geographic order: model yacht racing at Kerbs Boathouse on Conservatory Water, 9 to 3; storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue, 10 to 1, right beside it; the Seneca Village tour from Mariners’ Gate at 11; That Guitar Man at Hernshead, noon to 6, which is the loveliest place in the park to sit and hear someone play; the Skate Circle on Dead Road from 2; and tango at the Shakespeare statue from 6 to 9 as the light goes. Up north, Unitymarketsny fills Farmers’ Gate at 110th and Lenox from 9. Two heads-up items: a half marathon runs the north end 7:30–11, and East Meadow is closed all weekend.

Sun Aug 2 — the north end has the better afternoon

83°F and cloudy. Summer on the Harlem Meer runs 9 to 6 at the Dana Discovery Center, with Kobie Dozier playing free at 2 PM — jazz, soul and hip-hop as part of the Harlem Meer Performance Festival. That’s the walk to take today: up the east side, around the Meer, and back through the North Woods. Mid-park, the International Folkdancers hold King Jagiello Plaza from 11 to 8, which is worth ten minutes of watching. A 5K/10K goes off from Bandshell Plaza 9–11:30, so give the Mall a wide berth in the morning.

Mon Aug 3 — the rain walk

81°F, showers and thunderstorms most of the day. Nothing is scheduled and nothing is crowded. This is the Ramble, the Loch and the Ravine at their best — the paths empty out, the water runs, and the light through wet leaves is the reason to own a rain jacket. The East 72nd Street Playground and the East 106th Street Lawn are fenced for maintenance.

Tue Aug 4, 7:30 PM — Naumburg at the Bandshell

84°F and humid with a storm chance. Nosky’s Baroque Band plays the Naumburg Bandshell at 7:30, free — the 121st season of the oldest free outdoor classical series in the country. Come at 6:30 with something to sit on; the Mall fills from both ends. Earlier in the day National Night Out takes Merchants’ Gate 2–6 PM.

Wed Aug 5 — the empty day

84°F with a chance of showers, and genuinely nothing on the calendar. No tours, no permits worth naming, no crowds. If you want the park to yourself, this is the day of the week to take it — the Conservatory Garden and Shakespeare Garden both in the morning, then the Ramble.

Thu Aug 6 — the Arsenal, and a big evening at Rumsey

86°F. Two free things worth the trip: the Jack Vartoogian photography show at the Arsenal, 9 to 5, forty years of SummerStage in pictures, and Foundational Voices, 4:30 to 7 at the Arsenal — the people who built the festival, talking about it. The Iconic Views tour leaves Columbus Circle at 10 again. From 6 PM the 72nd Street entrance is the worst it gets all week as Rumsey fills for Andrew Bird.
