Central Park Sports This Week: Jul 31 – Aug 6 — a half marathon Saturday, crit racing Sunday, and 70 softball slots Thursday

Hi — the loop finally has racing on it again. A half marathon takes East Drive Saturday morning, CRCA’s crit series takes it back before dawn Sunday, and a 5K/10K goes off from the Bandshell mid-morning. On the fields, softball keeps climbing: Thursday carries 70 softball permits across Heckscher and the Great Lawn, the heaviest single day in the current calendar.

Weather this week

Both race mornings are dry — 86°F and sunny Saturday, 83°F and cloudy Sunday — before storms Sunday night wash out Monday at 81°F and leave Tuesday through Thursday humid in the mid-80s with afternoon thunderstorm chances near 50 percent. Saturday’s half is going to be hot for a summer half, so expect slow times and heavy fluid stations; the weekday leagues are the ones that will lose innings to lightning, most likely Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Sat Aug 1, 7:30–11 AM — NYC Summer Half Marathon and 5 Miler

The permit covers the 102nd Street Transverse and East Drive, field staged at the north end, two distances going off together. It’s a hot one on paper — mid-80s by the back half of the half — and the north-end rollers are where it will be decided. On the fields the same morning: 20 permits at North Meadow, 13 on the Great Lawn, 11 at Heckscher, mostly adult softball with six baseball slots. East Meadow is closed all weekend. Model yacht racing runs 9 to 3 on Conservatory Water out of Kerbs Boathouse.

Sun Aug 2, 4–8:30 AM — CRCA Central Park Racing Series on East Drive

The club crit series is back on East Drive from 4 to 8:30 AM — a full field at race pace through the dark and the early light, which is the closest thing the park has to a spectator bike race if you’re willing to get up. Then the Comic Run 5K and 10K, 9 to 11:30, out of Bandshell Plaza and across the 72nd Street Cross Drive. Sunday is also the week’s second-heaviest field day: 44 softball permits, 21 at North Meadow, 17 on the Great Lawn, 16 at Heckscher, plus seven baseball and three kickball slots.

Mon Aug 3 — the leagues play through the rain, or don’t

81°F with storms most of the day and an 80% chance — expect cancellations. On paper: 52 softball permits, split 20 North Meadow, 20 Heckscher, 15 Great Lawn, plus Little League and the James Christie soccer training blocks on South Dead Road morning and afternoon. Nothing on the drives. The East 72nd Street Playground goes offline for maintenance.

Tue Aug 4 — bowling, tennis and the biggest North Meadow day

84°F, storms possible late. 53 softball permits with North Meadow at 24 — the heaviest single-venue load of the week — plus 19 on the Great Lawn and 13 at Heckscher. Three youth tennis blocks 1 to 4 PM, and a Bowling Greens permit on the Bowling Green Lawn, which shows up rarely enough to be worth naming. The East 102nd Street Landscape is closed all day for maintenance.

Wed Aug 5 — pure league day

84°F with a shower chance and nothing else on the calendar at all — no races, no closures on the drives, no special events anywhere in the park. 49 softball permits (North Meadow 22, Heckscher 17, Great Lawn 16), three baseball, two kickball, a Universal Kids Soccer block and the usual soccer training on South Dead Road.

Thu Aug 6 — the heaviest day in the calendar

70 softball permits — 28 at Heckscher, 26 on the Great Lawn, 20 at North Meadow. That is the busiest single day anywhere in the current window, and if you play a late slot at Heckscher, expect the fields to have been in continuous use since morning. Add three youth tennis blocks 1 to 4 PM and two baseball. 86°F with storms possible in the afternoon, so bring a rain plan for evening games.
