Central Park Running Heads-Up: Jul 31 – Aug 6 — a half marathon on East Drive Saturday, crit racing Sunday dawn
Hey runners — last week had nothing on the drives. This one has both weekend mornings spoken for: a half marathon staging off the 102nd Street Transverse Saturday, and the CRCA peloton on East Drive before dawn Sunday followed by a 5K/10K out of Bandshell Plaza. Plan your two long efforts around those windows and the rest of the week is yours.
Weather this week
Dry and warm through the weekend — 86°F and mostly sunny Saturday, 83°F and cloudy Sunday — then storms arrive Sunday night, Monday is a genuine washout at 81°F with an 80% chance of rain, and Tuesday through Thursday sit humid in the mid-80s with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Take Saturday after 11:30 and Wednesday morning as your quality days, treat Monday as easy rain miles, and start early Tuesday through Thursday to beat the afternoon convection.
Fri Jul 31 — clean drives, and Bethesda goes offline for the month
Nothing permitted on the loop today. Two things to file away: the Columbus Circle food market runs to 9 PM at Merchants’ Gate, so the southwest entrance is thick if you come in that corner, and Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is closed for the whole of August — if that’s your water-and-stretch stop at the end of a lower-loop run, pick a new one now rather than discovering it mid-cooldown. Tonight is 71°F with a slight storm chance early, then clearing.
Sat Aug 1, 7:30–11 AM — NYC Summer Half Marathon and 5 Miler take East Drive
The permit covers the 102nd Street Transverse and East Drive from 7:30 to 11 AM, with the field staged at the north end. This is not a run-through-it situation on the east side — expect a full race field, mile markers, and fluid stations through the 90s and 100s. Your options: get out before 7, wait until 11:30, or run the west side and the Reservoir and accept the crossing traffic at the transverses. East Meadow is closed all weekend, so it’s out for strides both days. In the evening, SummerStage opens Rumsey at 6 for a Latin triple bill and the queue reaches back toward the 72nd Street entrance from about 5:30.
Sun Aug 2, 4–8:30 AM and 9–11:30 AM — the drives work two shifts
Two separate events, back to back. CRCA’s Central Park Racing Series holds East Drive from 4 to 8:30 AM — that’s the club crit series, so the north end has a fast, tight bunch on it in the dark and early light. Then the Comic Run 5K and 10K goes off from Bandshell Plaza at 9, running to 11:30 and pulling the 72nd Street Cross Drive with it. Between the two, the loop isn’t a good place for a workout until about noon. Run the Bridle Path or the Reservoir in the morning, or take the day easy and save the effort for Wednesday. East Meadow is still closed. Storms build after dark.
Mon Aug 3 — the washout, and nothing is in your way
81°F with showers and thunderstorms most of the day, an 80% chance. The drives are completely clear — the only permits are lawn maintenance at East 106th and the East 72nd Street Playground, both off-route. If you have lightning to work around, shift to the afternoon gap and accept wet shoes; the drives never close for weather.
Tue Aug 4 — clear drives, Bandshell crowd from 6:30
84°F with a 50% storm chance, humid. Nothing on the loop. Two crowd notes on your evening route: Naumburg Orchestral Concerts play the Bandshell at 7:30 and people start settling on the Mall around 6:30, and National Night Out runs 2–6 PM at Merchants’ Gate. Neither takes road, both put pedestrians at the crossings.
Wed Aug 5 — the clean day, and the one to use
84°F with a 41% shower chance and nothing permitted anywhere near the drives — no races, no staging, no closures beyond routine lawn maintenance in the northeast. This is the week’s quality window. Go in the morning before the afternoon cells build.
Thu Aug 6 — the biggest Rumsey night of the week
86°F, scattered storms possible. Drives clear all day. Andrew Bird with the Wordless Music Orchestra plays Rumsey at 8, a 20th-anniversary performance and the best-attended show of the week — the 72nd Street entrance is the worst it gets from about 6 onward. Columbus Circle food market again from 9:30. PAGNY holds a wellness event on Great Hill Oval 9–11 AM if you loop the north end.
