Central Park Watcher's Digest: Jul 31 – Aug 6 — Bethesda Terrace goes offline for the month, and both weekend mornings are permitted to races

        The week’s structural story is a month-long one: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain carries a closure permit that runs from today through August 31. Thirty-two consecutive days at the single most-visited built landscape in the park, in peak season. Everything else this week is the ordinary August pattern — a heavy weekend, a wet Monday, and a mid-week trough — but that closure will shape foot traffic all month.

Weather this week
A dry, hot weekend at 86°F and 83°F gives way to storms Sunday night, a wet Monday at 81°F, and then a humid, unsettled Tuesday-to-Thursday in the mid-80s with daily thunderstorm chances between 40 and 50 percent. No heat advisory in the forecast and no sustained extreme — this is a normal early-August pattern, not an event.

The pattern this week
Both weekend mornings are permitted to competition. The NYC Summer Half Marathon and 5 Miler hold East Drive and the 102nd Street Transverse Saturday 7:30–11; CRCA’s racing series holds East Drive Sunday 4–8:30 AM; the Comic Run 5K/10K goes off from Bandshell Plaza Sunday 9–11:30. Three separate permits on the drives in twenty-four hours is on the high side for a non-marathon weekend, and worth noting after a week with nothing on them at all.

The permit load is climbing into August. 585 events fall inside these seven days against a running collection of 2,593. Thursday alone carries 110 — 79 of them field-sports permits, with Heckscher at 28 and the Great Lawn at 26. That’s the heaviest single day in the current window.

Rumsey is under continuous permit. The SummerStage festival permit covers Rumsey Playfield from 8 AM to midnight on Saturday, Sunday and Thursday, with a separate all-day production permit Tuesday. Four days of the seven, the playfield is not a public space.

Landscapes offline: Bethesda Terrace all month; East Meadow Saturday and Sunday; the East 102nd Street Landscape Tuesday; the East 72nd Street Playground and the East 106th Street Lawn on rolling maintenance from Monday. Fewer simultaneous closures than last week’s four, but the Bethesda one outweighs the count.

  Wed Aug 5 — the trough. No events of any kind beyond league play and lawn maintenance.
  Thu Aug 6 — heaviest permit day of the week; Foundational Voices at the Arsenal 4:30–7; Andrew Bird at Rumsey 8 PM.

Two data notes
Two events in our own feed were wrong and have been dropped from this week’s editions. “Free Movies” (Aug 3) and “Free Concerts” (Aug 6), both carried as Great Lawn events, are actually permitted at Astoria Park in Queens — the location string says so outright, and neither appears in the current Open Data pull. They were ingested at some point in the past and have been sitting in the collection since. The July 26 editions repeated the Monday one as a Great Lawn movie night; that was our error.

Three permit locations didn’t match the places vocabulary in this week’s pull and were dropped: Doris C. Freedman Plaza, and two entries at 110th and Adam Clayton Powell. The first is a real park venue and should be in the vocabulary.
