Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Jul 31 – Aug 6 — CRCA has East Drive Sunday at 4 AM, a half marathon has it Saturday
Hi cyclists — the drives are busy at both ends of this weekend. CRCA’s racing series takes East Drive from 4 AM Sunday, and Saturday morning a half marathon field occupies the same road from 7:30 to 11. If you’re not racing, ride Saturday early or Sunday afternoon, and treat the weekdays as the open water.
Weather this week
Warm and dry through the weekend — 86°F and mostly sunny Saturday with barely any wind, 83°F and cloudy Sunday — before storms roll in Sunday night and hand you a wet Monday at 81°F, with Tuesday through Thursday humid in the mid-80s and scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Saturday is the best surface of the week if you can get out before the race field, and Wednesday morning is the clean weekday ride; skip the Monday commute laps unless you like descending Harlem Hill in the rain.
Fri Jul 31 — nothing on the road, thick at Merchants’ Gate
No permits on the drives. The Columbus Circle food market runs 9:30 AM to 9 PM at Merchants’ Gate, so the southwest entrance is a pedestrian mess most of the day — enter at 72nd or Engineers’ Gate if you’re doing laps. Worth knowing for the month ahead: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is closed through August 31, which shifts the usual tourist knot slightly north and west toward the Mall and the 72nd Street crossing.
Sat Aug 1, 7:30–11 AM — half marathon on East Drive and the 102nd Street Transverse
The NYC Summer Half Marathon and 5 Miler hold East Drive and the 102nd Street Transverse from 7:30 to 11. Runners on the road at the north end plus fluid stations means you’re either done before 7:15 or you’re waiting until 11:30 — and the north end is the part to avoid, not the whole loop. Conditions are otherwise perfect: 86°F, mostly sunny, wind 1 to 5 mph out of the south. From 5:30 PM the SummerStage queue at 72nd Street pushes spectators onto the lower loop crossing.
Sun Aug 2, 4–8:30 AM — CRCA Central Park Racing Series has East Drive
The club series is on East Drive from 4 to 8:30 AM. If you’re racing, you know the drill. If you’re not, this is the morning to stay off the east side entirely — a full field at race pace through the dark hours is not the place for a tempo lap. Add the Comic Run 5K and 10K from 9 to 11:30 out of Bandshell Plaza, which puts runners across the 72nd Street Cross Drive right as the racers clear. Ride the afternoon: 83°F, cloudy, dry until after dark.
Mon Aug 3 — wet, and completely clear
81°F with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Nothing permitted on the drives at all. The only closures are lawn maintenance at East 106th and the East 72nd Street Playground, neither of which touches you. Wet leaves at the bottom of Harlem Hill and around the Cat Hill descent are the only real hazard.
Tue Aug 4 — open drives, two pedestrian pinch points
84°F, humid, storms possible in the afternoon. No road permits. Two crowds to route around: National Night Out at Merchants’ Gate, 2–6 PM, right where you’d enter at Columbus Circle, and the Naumburg concert at the Bandshell at 7:30, which fills Bandshell Plaza and the Mall crossings from 6:30. Neither closes road; both put people where you brake.
Wed Aug 5 — the open day
84°F with a 41% shower chance and nothing on the calendar. No races, no staging, no closures — the cleanest weekday of the week and the one to use for intervals. Morning, before the afternoon cells.
Thu Aug 6 — biggest Rumsey crowd of the week from 6 PM
86°F with scattered storms. Drives clear, but Andrew Bird plays Rumsey at 8 PM and it’s the week’s marquee show — the 72nd Street entrance is heavily congested from 6 onward and spectators spill toward the lower loop. The Columbus Circle food market runs again from 9:30. Do the evening ride before 5:30 or take it north of the 86th Street Transverse.
