Central Park Walking Plans: Jul 27 – Aug 2 — three Conservancy tours return to the calendar

Hi walkers — the news this week is that the Central Park Conservancy’s guided walks are back on our calendar after being missing from it for months. The Iconic Views tour runs most mornings from Columbus Circle, the Activism in Central Park walk goes Friday from Women’s Gate, and the Seneca Village tour meets Saturday at Mariners’ Gate. If you’ve wanted a walk with someone who knows the ground, this is your week.

Weather this week

Wet from Monday evening through Wednesday — Tuesday brings thunderstorms at 78°F and Wednesday showers at 75°F — then Thursday clears at 81°F and Friday and Saturday arrive dry and sunny at 83–85°F. The two cool showery days are actually the best light of the week for the Ramble and the North Woods if you don’t mind damp shoes; save the long open-landscape walks for Thursday through Saturday.

Mon Jul 27 — walk early, then let the storms have the evening

82°F with showers building late. Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill are closed for maintenance — two of the better sit-down-and-look spots on the east side, so plan the lawn portion of your walk elsewhere this week. Bethesda Terrace is also still fenced. A free movie fills the Great Lawn at 7 PM, so the mid-park paths get busy at dusk.

Tue Jul 28 — the rainy-day walk

Showers and thunderstorms, 78°F. This is a Ramble and North Woods day — the tree canopy takes the edge off the rain, the paths empty out, and the Loch actually runs after a soak. If you want company instead of solitude, the Bandshell has a dance performance at noon.

Wed Jul 29 — cool and quiet until evening

75°F with showers and a north wind — the most comfortable walking temperature of the week. Everything is open and nothing is crowded until about 5:30, when the SummerStage queue builds toward the 72nd Street entrance for a 6 PM show. Time the Mall and Bethesda before then, or walk the west side and let the crowd have the east.

Thu Jul 30 — Iconic Views tour, market, and two evening crowds

Clearing to 81°F. The Iconic Views of Central Park tour leaves Columbus Circle at 10 AM (90 minutes, 1.3 miles, a few inclines and stairs) — the landmark-and-landscape circuit if you want the park narrated. The Columbus Circle food market runs from 9:30 at Merchants’ Gate. In the evening the Great Lawn hosts a free concert and Rumsey has a SummerStage show, so the mid-park transverses carry crowds after 6.

Fri Jul 31 — the Activism walk, and the best walking day yet

Mostly sunny, 83°F. The Activism in Central Park tour meets 11 AM at Women’s Gate (West 72nd and Central Park West) — Conservancy guides on the park’s long history of civic expression, $33 with a members’ discount. Iconic Views runs again at 10 from Columbus Circle. Nothing else competes for the paths.

Sat Aug 1 — Seneca Village at Mariners’ Gate, and a full park

85°F and sunny, the busiest day of the week. The Seneca Village tour meets 11 AM at Mariners’ Gate (West 85th and Central Park West) — the community that lived here before the park did, walked on the ground where it stood. Elsewhere: storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue at 10, That Guitar Man at Hernshead at noon, model yachts racing at Kerbs Boathouse from 9, and a tango gathering at the Shakespeare Statue at 6. East Meadow is closed all weekend.

Sun Aug 2 — Harlem Meer morning

Beyond the forecast horizon — check before you set out. Summer on the Harlem Meer opens at the Dana Discovery Center at 9, the International Folkdancers gather at King Jagiello Plaza at 11, and there’s free live music at the Meer at 2. The north end is the place to be this Sunday; the lower loop gets its usual evening SummerStage crowd. East Meadow still closed.
