National Dance Institute turns 50 at the Bandshell: Jul 27 – Aug 2

        Hi theater fans — a thin week on stage, with one thing genuinely worth the trip: National Dance Institute marks its fiftieth anniversary at Bandshell Plaza on Tuesday at noon. Around it, outdoor film returns to the Great Hill two nights running, and Monday brings a Pinocchio staging on the Great Lawn.

Weather this week
Thunderstorms Tuesday at 78°F and showers Wednesday at 75°F, then clearing Thursday at 81°F and dry and sunny Friday and Saturday at 83–85°F. Tuesday’s noon performance and the two Great Hill screenings are the shows with real weather exposure — check before you travel for any of them, and assume the Wednesday screening is the most likely to move.

Tue Jul 28, noon — National Dance Institute’s 50th Anniversary, Bandshell Plaza
The week’s event. NDI has been putting New York City public-school children on stage since Jacques d’Amboise founded it in 1976, straight out of a career at New York City Ballet. Fifty years of that work, performed outdoors at the Bandshell — under the shell that has carried free performance in this park since 1905. Free, midday, and short enough to make a lunch hour. Thunderstorms are forecast, so confirm before you go.

Mon Jul 27, 11 AM — Pinocchio in the Park, Great Lawn
Outdoor children’s theater on the Great Lawn — Pinocchio staged in the open, no ticket, no seats but the grass. Worth an hour if you like watching how a company solves a story without a proscenium. That evening, a free movie is permitted on the Great Lawn at 7 PM.

Wed Jul 29 & Thu Jul 30, 7 PM — Film Screenings, the Great Hill
Two nights of outdoor film at the Great Hill, the park’s quietest big lawn and a much better screening room than the Great Lawn — smaller crowd, better sightlines, and trees on three sides. Wednesday’s showers make that the riskier of the two; Thursday is clearing and the safer bet.

Sat Aug 1, 6 PM — Tango at the Shakespeare Statue
Social tango at the Shakespeare Statue Plaza at the south end of the Mall, at the hour the light gets long. Not staged work, but the closest thing the park offers to performance you can stand three feet from — and the setting does a lot of the work.

What’s not on the calendar
Two honest notes, because a thin week is a good time for them:

  We have no Delacorte dates. Shakespeare in the Park runs on a hand-maintained schedule in our data, and there’s nothing in it for this season yet. If you know the Public has announced dates, they’re not reaching us — we’ll add them the moment they do.
  Swedish Cottage marionette programming isn’t currently in our pipeline. The Marionette Theatre’s schedule comes from a source we’re not yet ingesting, so it will be missing from these emails until that’s fixed. Check the Swedish Cottage directly in the meantime — it runs regardless of whether we’re reporting it.
