Central Park Sports This Week: Jul 27 – Aug 2 — the annual softball event takes Heckscher Wednesday

        Hi sports fans — the headline is Wednesday, when the annual softball event fills Heckscher Fields from 11 AM. Otherwise this is a heavy but ordinary permit week: North Meadow and the Great Lawn carry twenty-odd games a day, the clay oval runs its July program, and there’s no race on the loop for the first time in a while.

Storms Tuesday at 78°F and showers Wednesday at 75°F, then clearing Thursday at 81°F and dry and sunny Friday and Saturday at 83–85°F. Tuesday is the day to expect cancellations and Wednesday the day to expect a soft, slow outfield — check with your league before you travel for either.

Wed Jul 29, from 11 AM — Annual Softball Event, Heckscher Fields
The week’s one real event. Heckscher — the park’s oldest ballfields, and still the ones with the best sightlines — carries the annual tournament from late morning, alongside fourteen other permitted games on the same complex. Showers are in the forecast at 75°F, so bring the layer and expect a heavy infield. If you just want to watch good ball in a great setting, this is the day.

  Tue Jul 28 — Great Lawn 25, North Meadow 24, Heckscher 7. The busiest day on paper, and the wettest in practice.
  Wed Jul 29 — North Meadow 23, Heckscher 14 (plus the tournament), Great Lawn 4.
  Thu Jul 30 — Heckscher 20, Great Lawn 18, North Meadow 10.
  Fri Jul 31 — North Meadow 13, Heckscher 12, Great Lawn 9. The lightest weekday.
  Sat Aug 1 — North Meadow 20, Great Lawn 14, Heckscher 10.
  Sun Aug 2 — North Meadow 20, Great Lawn 17, Heckscher 16.

North Meadow is the constant all week — if you’re looking for a pickup game, that’s where the density is.

  Youth soccer runs daily. James Christie training at Levin Playground at 9:30 and South Dead Road at 1, Monday through Friday. Universal Kids Soccer takes the East 106th Street Lawn Wednesday morning.
  The East 102nd Street Clay Oval carries its July program Monday through Thursday from 9 AM.
  Model yacht racing at Kerbs Boathouse, Saturday from 9 AM on Conservatory Water — the Central Park Model Yacht Club’s weekly races, and one of the few competitive things in the park you can watch from a bench with coffee.
  Chess lecture and simul series, Saturday from 9 AM at the Chess and Checkers House, with beginners’ workshops running alongside.

Closures that shift schedules

  Bowling Green closes Thursday for maintenance — the lawn-bowling green is out for the day.
  East Meadow is closed all weekend, Saturday and Sunday both. Any informal play that normally lands there moves to North Meadow, which is already carrying twenty games a day.
  Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill are under maintenance Monday; neither carries permitted play.

On the loop
Nothing. No race, no charity run, no crit — the first clean week on the drives in a while. The next race is the marathon training series 12M on Aug 15, followed by Grete’s Great Gallop 10K on Aug 22. The full fall calendar is now on the site: the 18-miler Sep 20, the marathon itself Nov 1, Ted Corbitt 15K Dec 5, and the Midnight Run on New Year’s Eve.
