Central Park Nature Notes: Jul 27 – Aug 2 — two wet days in the Ramble, and the Seneca Village walk returns

Hi nature lovers — the Conservancy’s guided walks are back on our calendar this week after a long absence, including the Seneca Village walk on Saturday morning. And Tuesday and Wednesday bring the first real soaking in a while, which means the Loch runs, the Ravine gets loud, and the woodland paths empty of everyone but you.

Weather this week

Thunderstorms Tuesday at 78°F and showers Wednesday at 75°F with a north wind behind them, then clearing Thursday at 81°F and dry and sunny Friday and Saturday at 83–85°F. Take the two wet days as the gift they are — the North Woods and the Ravine are at their best a few hours after rain, and the heat later in the week will push most people onto the open lawns and away from the woodland.

Mon Jul 27 — a dry morning before the front

82°F with showers building late. Quiet across the board; the Ramble and Hallett are as empty as a Monday gets. Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill are closed for maintenance — worth knowing if you watch the hawks work the east-side slopes, since the mowing crews change what’s hunting there.

Tue Jul 28 — the rain day, and the best one

Showers and thunderstorms most of the day, 78°F. The canopy over the Ramble handles a steady rain better than you’d expect, and the paths clear out entirely. Go to the North Woods in the afternoon if the rain lets up — the Loch is the single best thing in the park after a real soak, and the Ravine’s water sounds like something much further from a city than it is.

Wed Jul 29 — cool, wet, and the north wind arrives

75°F with showers and a shifting north wind — the coolest day since June and the closest thing to autumn light you’ll get in July. Turtle Pond and the Belvedere terrace are worth the walk in this weather; the pond surface in rain is a different animal. Nothing scheduled anywhere near the woodland.

Thu Jul 30 — clearing, and the light comes back

81°F, clearing, north wind at 14 mph. The Iconic Views tour leaves Columbus Circle at 10 AM — landscape-and-landmark rather than ecology, but the Conservancy guides know the ground and it’s 90 minutes well spent. The Conservatory Garden is the place to be in post-frontal light; the north wind keeps the humidity off.

Fri Jul 31 — the quiet day

Mostly sunny, 83°F, nothing on the calendar that touches the north end or the woodland. If you want the Hallett Nature Sanctuary or Summit Rock to yourself, this is the morning.

Sat Aug 1, 11 AM — Seneca Village Tour, Mariners’ Gate

85°F and sunny. The Conservancy’s Seneca Village walk meets at Mariners’ Gate (West 85th and Central Park West) — the landscape of the community that lived here before the park was built, read through the ground itself. Not a nature walk in the strict sense, but the best way to understand why the west-side terrain looks the way it does.

Elsewhere the park is at peak summer-Saturday capacity, so the woodland is the refuge: the Ramble and North Woods stay quiet even on days like this. East Meadow is closed all weekend.

Sun Aug 2 — the Meer

Past the current forecast horizon; check before you set out. Summer on the Harlem Meer opens at 9 at the Dana Discovery Center — catch-and-release fishing, and the easiest place in the park to spend a morning at the water’s edge. Early is best: herons and egrets work the Meer’s north shore before the crowds arrive, and the Loch is a five-minute walk uphill from there.
