Central Park Music & Performance: Jul 27 – Aug 2 — four SummerStage nights at Rumsey, all free

        Hi music fans — four SummerStage shows at Rumsey Playfield this week, Wednesday through Sunday, and every one of them is free. Julieta Venegas opens it Wednesday, a 40th-anniversary hip-hop bill lands Thursday, Argentine rap Saturday, and Mandopop Sunday. Add salsa at the Harlem Meer and free music on the Great Lawn and this is the fullest week of the summer so far.

Weather this week
Storms Monday night through Wednesday — Tuesday is the wettest at 78°F, Wednesday showers at 75°F — then it clears Thursday at 81°F and stays dry and sunny Friday and Saturday at 83–85°F. Wednesday’s show is the one with real weather risk, so check SummerStage’s socials before you head to Rumsey; Thursday onward is open-air weather.

Wed Jul 29, 6 PM — Julieta Venegas / Lasso / Micro TDH / DJ Anamaria Sayre
Rumsey Playfield, free. A Spanish-language pop bill in association with the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Venegas has been a fixture of Mexican pop since Sí in 2003 — the accordion-and-guitar songwriter’s set that made her, played outdoors. Lasso and Micro TDH bring the Venezuelan side of the bill. Doors before 6; the queue builds toward the 72nd Street entrance from about 5:30. Showers are possible, so bring the layer.

Thu Jul 30, 7 PM — UBB 40th Anniversary: BreakBeat Lou & Lord Finesse / Diamond D / Grand Puba / Sadat X / Nice & Smooth / Peter Gunz / DJ Boogie Blind
Rumsey Playfield, free. Forty years of Ultimate Breaks and Beats — the compilation series that supplied the drums for most of the golden age — celebrated by the people who actually built on it. BreakBeat Lou co-compiled the records; Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Grand Puba and Sadat X made the music that came out the other side. If you only go to one Rumsey night this week, this is the one with the deepest bench.

Same evening there’s a free concert permitted on the Great Lawn at 7 PM, and salsa at the Dana Discovery Center from 4 PM on the Harlem Meer — the north end’s own scene, and a genuinely different crowd from Rumsey.

Sat Aug 1, 6 PM — Trueno / Milo J / J Noa
Rumsey Playfield, free. Argentine rap at the front of its current wave: Trueno out of La Boca, Milo J still barely into his twenties, and Dominican MC J Noa on the same bill. 85°F and sunny — this one will be full early, so come at doors rather than at set time.

Earlier that day, tango at the Shakespeare Statue Plaza from 6 PM if you want something you can stand close to, and That Guitar Man at Hernshead at noon — the long-running lakeside busking institution.

Sun Aug 2, 7 PM — WayV / THE EITHER / Chopstix
Rumsey Playfield, free. WayV, the Chinese-language unit of the NCT system, headlining a Mandopop-leaning bill. Expect the earliest queue of the week — this is the kind of show where the line forms in the morning.

Before that, the Central Park International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza at 11 AM — open circle, no experience required, and a decades-old Sunday ritual. Kobie Dozier plays the Dana Discovery Center at 2 PM, free, Conservancy-run.

  Mon Jul 27, 5 PM — high school choir concert, Bandshell Plaza. Short, free, and the Bandshell’s acoustics do the rest.
  Tue Jul 28, noon — National Dance Institute’s 50th anniversary, Bandshell Plaza. Dance rather than music proper, but it’s the Bandshell’s only midweek programming.
  The Arsenal’s “40 in Focus” — SummerStage’s own history through Jack Vartoogian’s photographs, free, open weekdays from 9. Worth an hour if the Wednesday rain lands.
