Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Jul 27 – Aug 2 — clear drives all week, wet Tue/Wed, dry weekend

Hi cyclists — nothing occupies the loop this week. No race, no charity ride, no staged event on East, West, or Center Drive between Monday and Sunday. That makes this a weather-planning week rather than a permit-planning one, and the weather splits cleanly down the middle: wet Monday night through Wednesday, dry and warm Thursday onward.

Weather this week

Thunderstorms move in Monday evening and hold through Tuesday (78°F, storms most of the day) and Wednesday (75°F, showers with a north wind), then Thursday clears at 81°F and Friday and Saturday come in mostly sunny at 83–85°F. Get your fast laps in Monday morning or from Thursday on — Tuesday and Wednesday are wet-descent days on the Harlem Hill drop, so ease off the west-side sweepers even if you go out.

Mon Jul 27 — dry morning, storms behind it

82°F, showers building late, thunderstorms overnight. Drives are completely clear. Morning laps are the best riding of the first half of the week — take them. Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill are under maintenance, neither near the road.

Tue Jul 28 — wet, and the descents are the reason to think twice

Showers and thunderstorms much of the day, 78°F. Nothing on the drives, so the only limiter is grip. If you ride, the Harlem Hill descent and the West Drive bend below 96th are where wet leaf-and-tar gets interesting. No pedestrian pinch points of note.

Wed Jul 29 — cool and showery, then a crowd at 72nd

75°F with rain showers and a north wind. Drives clear all day. The evening is the only thing to time: SummerStage opens Rumsey Playfield at 6 PM and the entrance queue spills toward the 72nd Street Cross Drive from about 5:30. That’s a walk-across-the-road situation right on the lower loop — ride before 5, or take the north end after work.

Thu Jul 30 — the good day returns

Clearing, 81°F, north wind at 14 mph — expect a headwind on the northbound East Drive stretch and a push coming back down the west side. Drives are open and clean. Two evening crowds converge: SummerStage at Rumsey at 7 PM and a free concert permitted on the Great Lawn at the same hour, which means pedestrian flow across the 79th and 86th transverses as well as the usual 72nd pinch. Fine before 6.

Fri Jul 31 — the clean one

Mostly sunny, 83°F, nothing anywhere near the loop. The Columbus Circle food market runs from 9:30 at Merchants’ Gate — the usual southwest-corner congestion where riders enter, so take the entry slowly and pick your line early.

Sat Aug 1 — warmest day, fullest park, empty road

85°F and sunny. The drives carry no events, but the park itself is at peak summer-Saturday capacity, which means pedestrians crossing everywhere regardless of what the permit list says. Early is the answer — before 8 the loop is genuinely quiet. Rumsey fills again at 6 PM.

Sun Aug 2 — open loop, one evening crowd

Past the current forecast horizon; check conditions before you commit to distance. Nothing on the drives. Folkdancers gather at King Jagiello Plaza late morning and there’s a 7 PM SummerStage show, so the 72nd Street crossing gets busy again in the evening. Otherwise this is an unusually free Sunday — no race field, no walk, no staging.
