National Dance Institute's 50th at the Bandshell, and Pinocchio on the Great Lawn — Jul 24–30
Hi theater fans — a quiet week for staged plays but a strong one for movement and performance. The centerpiece is a milestone dance program at the Bandshell; the surprise is an outdoor children’s play on the Great Lawn. The Delacorte stays dark this week, so the stage-craft is happening out in the park instead.
Weather this week
Sunny and low-to-mid 80s Friday through Sunday, then thunderstorms Monday evening and a wet Tuesday and Wednesday before Thursday clears. The weekend performances are safe outdoors; Monday’s and Tuesday’s midday shows carry a rain caveat, so confirm before you go.
Fri Jul 24 — dark
No staged performances today — a good evening to catch up on what’s coming.
Sat Jul 25 — tango on Literary Walk
At 6 PM, tango under the Shakespeare statue on Literary Walk — live music and dancers on the mall. Not a proscenium show, but the most watchable performance of the day, and a lovely one in the evening light.
Sun Jul 26 — steppers at Summit Rock
A steppers performance and dance demo at Summit Rock at 1:30 PM — percussive step dance staged on the park’s high west-side outcrop. Short, energetic, and worth the climb.
Mon Jul 27 — Pinocchio in the Park
Pinocchio in the Park plays the Great Lawn at 11 AM — outdoor children’s theater, and the week’s one genuinely staged play. Storms are possible by evening but the late-morning slot should hold; still, glance at the sky first.
Tue Jul 28 — a 50-year dance milestone
National Dance Institute’s 50th Anniversary “Runs and Leaps” takes Bandshell Plaza at noon — the marquee performance of the week and a landmark for one of the city’s great arts-education companies. It’s a wet day, so confirm the show is on before you head over.
Wed Jul 29 — the park turns musical
No straight theater today; SummerStage’s Rumsey stage goes to Julieta Venegas’s Latin-pop bill in the evening. If you follow the crossover into music, it’s the night’s draw — otherwise a rest night for the stage.
Thu Jul 30 — free concerts, no staged play
The week closes musical rather than theatrical — free concerts on the Great Lawn at 7 PM as the weather clears. No proscenium work on the calendar.
