Central Park Running Heads-Up: Jul 24–30 — a dry weekend, then Team Champs takes Sunday
Hey runners — two things shape the week. The weekend is dry and mild, the best three-day stretch of running weather in a while. Then Sunday morning the loop belongs to about 5,000 club runners, so build your plan around it now instead of finding out at 8 AM.
Weather this week
Low-to-mid 80s and sunny Friday through Sunday, then an unsettled middle of the week — showers and thunderstorms move in Monday evening, Tuesday is a washout, and Wednesday stays showery before Thursday clears. Do your quality and long work over the dry weekend mornings, keep Tuesday and Wednesday as easy run-in-the-rain days rather than skipping them, and take Thursday as the second clear day.
Fri Jul 24 — quiet drives, sunny and mild
Sunny, 83°F, barely any wind, and nothing touches the loop. Cherry Hill and the Dairy are closed for maintenance, but both sit off-route. This is a clean easy day — the kind of Friday you run without thinking about it.
Sat Jul 25 — full park, but the loop is yours
82°F and sunny, so the park fills — with picnickers and markets, not permits. Nothing on the drives. Go early for the temperature rather than the traffic. One note: the East Meadow is closed all weekend, so if you use it for strides or a cool-down, it’s out both Saturday and Sunday.
Sun Jul 26, 7:30–10 AM — NYRR Team Championships 5M takes the loop
The week’s real news. About 5,000 club runners race the Team Championships, worth double points in the Club Points Series — start and finish on the 102nd Street Cross Drive, out onto West Drive and around the lower loop.
What it means for you:
- The full loop carries race traffic roughly 7–10 AM. The field is large enough to occupy the whole ring, not just one direction.
- Staging from 6 AM behind the backstop of Ballfield #8 near East Drive and 102nd — the north end is congested well before the gun.
- Run before 6:30 AM or after 10:30 AM to have the loop to yourself.
- Or take the Bridle Path or the Reservoir — both stay open and clear all morning. The Bridle Path is the better call: soft, shaded, and completely off the route.
Mon Jul 27 — the best weekday, if you go early
Mostly sunny and 86°F, with thunderstorms possible by evening. Morning is the window for anything hard — get it in before the heat and the storm risk build. Cedar Hill and Pilgrim Hill close for maintenance, both off-loop.
Tue Jul 28 — wet, drives open
Showers and thunderstorms most of the day, 82°F. The drives stay open — this is a run-in-the-rain call, not a closure. Nothing on the loop but weather.
Wed Jul 29 — showery, plus a big Rumsey crowd after 5:30
More showers, 83°F. The Julieta Venegas SummerStage show fills Rumsey Playfield at 6 PM, and the queue spills toward the 72nd Street entrance from about 5:30. Run before then, or take the Reservoir and Bridle Path, which stay quiet regardless.
Thu Jul 30 — clearing, the second-best day
Mostly sunny, 84°F — put your mileage in the morning. There’s a free concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM that pulls people across the mid-park transverses from late afternoon, but the loop itself is unaffected; only a mid-park cool-down would notice. Bowling Green closes for maintenance, off-route.
Quick recap
- Sun Jul 26, 7:30–10 AM — Team Championships 5M. Full loop occupied, staging from 6 AM at the 102nd Street Cross Drive. Go before 6:30, after 10:30, or use the Bridle Path / Reservoir.
- The weekend is the running weather — dry and sunny Fri–Sun, nothing on the drives (Sat/Sun aside from the race).
- Tuesday and Wednesday are wet. Drives stay open; Wednesday adds a Rumsey crowd at 72nd after 5:30.
- Thursday clears — second-best day, run it in the morning.
- East Meadow closed Saturday and Sunday.
