Central Park Nature Notes: Jul 24–30 — Harlem Meer mornings, and the streams run after the rain

Hi nature lovers — a two-part week. Three calm, dry mornings to start, when the Ramble and North Woods are quiet before the crowds; then a wet middle that will send the Loch and the Ravine streams running hard by Thursday. The Harlem Meer is the place to be up north this weekend.

Weather this week

Sunny and low-to-mid 80s Friday through Sunday, then thunderstorms Monday evening and a soaking Tuesday and Wednesday before Thursday clears. Take the dry weekend dawns for the woodland quiet, and let the midweek rain do its work — the water features are at their best in the day or two after.

Fri Jul 24 — a quiet, comfortable dawn

Sunny, 83°F. Before 8 AM the Ramble and North Woods are still and cool, the dawn chorus thinning now into midsummer but the herons active at the Lake and Turtle Pond. A gentle morning to move slowly.

Sat Jul 25 — sailboats on Conservatory Water

82°F and sunny. Model yacht racing runs on Conservatory Water from 9 AM at Kerbs Boathouse — a slow, absorbing spectacle if you like the pond and its fringe of red-eared sliders. The Ramble stays quiet if you go early, before the weekend fills.

Sun Jul 26 — Summer on the Harlem Meer

84°F and sunny. Summer on the Harlem Meer at the Dana Discovery Center from 9 AM is the north end’s shoreline morning — turtles, egrets, and the Meer’s quiet water. It’s the calmest corner of the park on a busy Sunday; the mid-park core will be far busier.

Mon Jul 27 — early, before the heat and storms

86°F and building toward evening thunderstorms. The morning is the window — the Hallett Nature Sanctuary and the Pool’s north-end shade before it turns warm and unsettled.

Tue Jul 28 — rain does the work

Showers and thunderstorms all day. Not a walking day, but this is the rain the streams have been waiting for — expect the Loch and the Ravine to run strong once it passes.

Wed Jul 29 — showery, and a school casts at the Meer

More showers, 83°F. A middle-school group fishes the Harlem Meer mid-morning in the catch-and-release program — a reminder that the Meer’s a good, gentle fishing stop all week. Turtle Pond and the Meer are lively after the warm rain.

Thu Jul 30 — clear air, running water

Mostly sunny, 84°F, the air washed clean and the light sharp. The Loch waterfalls in the North Woods are worth the walk now, at their fullest after two days of rain. The best woodland morning of the week.
