Central Park Family Plans: Jul 24–30 — storytelling, model boats, Pinocchio, and free movies
Hi families — the weekend is made for you: dry, sunny, and full of free things to do, from Saturday-morning storytelling to the model sailboats on Conservatory Water. The rain holds off until Monday evening, so front-load the outdoor plans.
Weather this week
Sunny and low-to-mid 80s Friday through Sunday, then thunderstorms Monday evening and a wet Tuesday and Wednesday before Thursday clears. Do the big outdoor days over the weekend, keep the umbrellas handy for Monday’s evening movie, and treat Tuesday as an indoor day.
Fri Jul 24 — an easy park day
Sunny and 83°F. Nothing scheduled for kids specifically, but Gottesman Pool up at the Harlem Meer is open for the morning, and it’s a fine, mild day for the playgrounds and a picnic.
Sat Jul 25 — the big morning: storytelling and sailboats
82°F and sunny — the best family day of the week. Storytelling in Central Park gathers at the Hans Christian Andersen statue by Conservatory Water at 10 AM, the classic Saturday reading for younger kids. Right beside it, model yacht racing runs on Conservatory Water from 9 AM at Kerbs Boathouse — kids love watching the little boats tack across the pond.
Sun Jul 26 — up to the Harlem Meer
84°F and sunny. Summer on the Harlem Meer at the Dana Discovery Center from 9 AM is the day’s family programming — shoreline nature and activities at the park’s northern lake. Heads-up if you’re driving or biking up: a running race crowds the north end near 102nd Street before 10 AM, so give the northwest a wide berth early.
Mon Jul 27 — Pinocchio by day, a movie after dark
86°F, with storms possible by evening. Pinocchio in the Park plays the Great Lawn at 11 AM — outdoor kids’ theater — and there’s a free movie on the Great Lawn after sunset. Watch the forecast for the evening show; the storm risk could push it.
Tue Jul 28 — an indoor day
Showers and thunderstorms all day. A good day for a museum on the park’s edge rather than the playgrounds.
Wed Jul 29 — showery, ball games up north
More showers, 83°F. Universal Kids Soccer runs on the East 106th Street lawn and there’s an annual softball event at Heckscher — outdoor, so weather-dependent.
Thu Jul 30 — clearing, back-to-school field day
Mostly sunny, 84°F. A CRF back-to-school field day at Mineral Springs kicks off at 1 PM — games and activities as the summer starts to turn toward fall.
