Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Jul 24–30 — dry weekend spins, wet midweek, race Sunday
Hi cyclists — the weekend is the week. Three dry, sunny days front-load your good riding before an unsettled stretch takes over Tuesday and Wednesday. The one thing to plan around is Sunday morning, when the Team Championships put a big running field on the full loop.
Weather this week
Sunny and low-to-mid 80s Friday through Sunday, then thunderstorms Monday evening, a soaked Tuesday, and a showery Wednesday before Thursday dries out. Ride your distance over the weekend mornings and Monday early; treat Tuesday and Wednesday as wet-road days — the drives stay open, but the pavement doesn’t.
Fri Jul 24 — clean loop, watch Merchants’ Gate
Sunny, 83°F, and nothing on the drives. The only pinch is the Columbus Circle Food Market staging at Merchants’ Gate, which thickens foot traffic at the southwest entrance — carry speed through Center Drive but sit up at the gate.
Sat Jul 25 — dry and fast, spectators build at 72nd
82°F and sunny. The loop is open, but the SummerStage festival at Rumsey Playfield draws spectators toward the 72nd Street Cross Drive from mid-morning — the usual mid-park pedestrian churn where the loop narrows. Early laps are cleanest.
Sun Jul 26, 7:30–10 AM — Team Championships 5M owns the loop
About 5,000 club runners race the full loop from the 102nd Street Cross Drive, with staging from 6 AM at the north end. Expect to sit up and share the whole ring 7–10 AM — this is not a “pick a direction” morning. Ride before 6:30 or after 10:30, or take it as an easy social spin and accept the traffic. Rumsey’s SummerStage adds pedestrians mid-park by midday.
Mon Jul 27 — best dry weekday, go early
Mostly sunny, 86°F, thunderstorms possible by evening. The morning loop is fast and open — get your ride in before the afternoon instability. Nothing staged on the drives.
Tue Jul 28 — wet roads all day
Showers and thunderstorms, 82°F. The drives stay open, but standing water and slick paint at the crosswalks make this a caution day, not a PR day. Descend the Harlem Hill with room to spare.
Wed Jul 29 — showery, and a heavy 72nd crowd from 5:30
More showers, 83°F. The Julieta Venegas show fills Rumsey at 6 PM, and spectators pack the 72nd Street entrance and Cross Drive from about 5:30 — skip evening laps through the mid-park pinch and ride the outer loop instead, or go earlier.
Thu Jul 30 — drying out, loop clear
Mostly sunny, 84°F. The loop is clear all day. A free Great Lawn concert at 7 PM pulls foot traffic across the transverses, but it doesn’t reach the drives — a good evening to get back to normal mileage.
