Paul Taylor and Complexions at Rumsey, free — Jul 20–26

Hi theater fans — one enormous night this week. Wednesday, SummerStage puts Complexions Contemporary Ballet, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and LaTasha on the same free bill at Rumsey Playfield. That is a program you would pay Lincoln Center prices for, and it costs nothing.

Weather this week

The heat has broken into a mild 79–85°F week, but Tuesday and Wednesday both carry showers and thunderstorms before Thursday clears into a dry weekend. Wednesday’s storm risk lands squarely on the big night — SummerStage holds and delays rather than cancelling when it’s marginal, so the move is to show up prepared to wait rather than to stay home reading the radar.

Wed Jul 22, 8 PM — Complexions / Paul Taylor / LaTasha, Rumsey Playfield, free

The week, in one evening.

Paul Taylor Dance Company is one of the foundational American modern dance companies — Taylor came out of Martha Graham’s company and Merce Cunningham’s orbit and spent sixty years building a repertory that is, more than anything, musical. Seeing them outdoors on a summer night, free, is a genuinely different experience from seeing them in a proscenium house: you lose the sightlines and gain the sky.

Complexions Contemporary Ballet, founded by two Ailey alumni, is the athletic counterweight — ballet technique driven through contemporary and popular music, and a company that reads extremely well to an outdoor crowd that isn’t necessarily a dance audience. LaTasha rounds out the bill.

Practical: the queue at the 72nd Street entrance starts forming around 6:30 for an 8 PM curtain. Free but first-come, and this one will draw. Get in line by 7 at the latest. Bring a poncho rather than an umbrella — you’ll be asked to put an umbrella down.

Mon Jul 20, 5 PM — Dance Is Life at the Bandshell

A gentler opener on the best-weather day of the week. Dance Is Life at Bandshell Plaza at 5 PM, on a sunny, still, 80°F evening. The Bandshell is a more intimate space than Rumsey and worth walking the Mall to reach.

Sat Jul 25, 6 PM — tango at the Shakespeare Statue

Social tango in the open air at the south end of the Mall, at golden hour, on an 85°F sunny evening. Not a production, but performance in the older sense — and if you’ve never watched the Shakespeare Statue tango, it’s one of the park’s most quietly theatrical recurring scenes. There’s also a Bandshell concert at 2 PM earlier that afternoon.

Sun Jul 26, 1:30 PM — Steppers at Summit Rock

A Steppers performance and dance demo at Summit Rock. Stepping is a percussive, highly disciplined tradition with deep roots in Black fraternity and sorority culture — it rewards close watching, and Summit Rock, the highest point in the park, is an unusual and good venue for it. The International Folkdancers are at King Jagiello Plaza from 11 AM if you want a participatory morning first.

Weekdays — “40 in Focus” at the Arsenal

Free, from 9 AM on weekdays: “40 in Focus: SummerStage through the Lens of Photographer Jack Vartoogian”, forty years of the series photographed from the pit. Go on Wednesday afternoon before the show — seeing four decades of that stage and then standing in front of it the same night is the best programming accident of the week.

A note on the Delacorte

No Shakespeare in the Park performance dates appear in our calendar this week. To be straight with you: that’s our data, not the season. Free Shakespeare in the Park 2026 is running, but the Public Theater’s site blocks automated access and our season file hasn’t been filled in, so we can’t tell you which nights are which production or where the dark days fall. Check publictheater.org directly for Delacorte dates — don’t take our silence as an empty stage. We’re working on closing this gap.
