Central Park Sports This Week: Jul 20–26 — Team Champs Sunday, and a 75-permit Thursday
Hi sports fans — the marquee event is Sunday morning: the NYRR Team Championships, the one race a year where the club scene shows up in force and the results actually matter to somebody. Around it, a heavy week of league play and the World Cup finally packing up.
Weather this week
Highs of 79–85°F all week with thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday before a dry, sunny weekend — a completely different proposition from last week’s 98°F. Expect Tuesday and Wednesday to produce a run of rainouts and field closures across the softball and baseball blocks, and expect Thursday’s already-heavy schedule to get heavier as games get moved into it.
Sun Jul 26, 7:30 AM — NYRR Team Championships 5M
The event of the week and one of the better races on the NYRR calendar to actually watch. About 5,000 club runners contest men’s, women’s, and non-binary points races worth double points in the 2026 Club Points Series — which is why the front of the field is genuinely deep. This is where the city’s clubs settle things.
- Start and finish on the 102nd Street Cross Drive, heading west onto West Drive and around the lower loop.
- Race-Day Central behind the backstop of Ballfield #8, near East Drive and 102nd. Bib pickup and bag check from 6 AM.
- The drives carry the race roughly 7–10 AM. If you’re not racing, the loop is not usable for anything else in that window — before 6:30 or after 10:30, or take the Bridle Path.
- Best spectating: the 102nd Street Cross Drive for the start and finish, or the Harlem Hill climb if you want to watch the race actually break apart. Double points means teams run it as a team — packs, not stragglers.

Same composition as the last month: adult softball and baseball blocks across the North Meadow and Heckscher, youth little league, and the standing weekday development programs — James Christie soccer training at Levin Playground and the South Dead Road, CP Sports at the South Dead Road twice daily, and the SSS summer sessions. The East 102nd Street Clay Oval runs daily at 9 AM all week.
Two field notes: the East Meadow is closed Saturday and Sunday, which pulls its usual weekend slots out of the schedule, and the Great Lawn is tied up Monday and Tuesday for the last of the World Cup viewing setup before coming back into play.
Mon Jul 20 — the World Cup’s last day on the Great Lawn
Sunny and 80°F. The final morning of the World Cup Final Viewing Experience on the Great Lawn, closing out a tournament that has had the park’s biggest open space spoken for most of the month. Full weekday league slate otherwise, and Gottesman Pool has free lap swim from 7 AM if you want a session that isn’t weather-dependent.
Tue Jul 21 and Wed Jul 22 — storms, expect rainouts
Thunderstorms both days. Check before you travel for anything on grass — the North Meadow drains slowly and Wednesday’s cells arrive in the afternoon, right into the evening softball blocks. Wednesday is the day most likely to lose games outright.
Thu Jul 23 — the heaviest day of the week
Clearing, 80°F, and about 75 permitted events. Every diamond in the park is spoken for. If you’re playing a pickup game Thursday you will not find an open field — go Friday instead, when the count drops to 41.
Sat Jul 25 — model yachts and the Skate Circle
85°F and sunny. Model yacht racing on Conservatory Water at Kerbs Boathouse from 9 AM — the oldest continuously operating model yacht club in the country, and a real competition rather than a demonstration. The chess simul series at the Chess and Checkers House at 9 AM pairs a lecture with beginners’ workshops. And the Central Park Skate Circle at Dead Road North from 2 PM, which also runs Sunday.
