Central Park Running Heads-Up: Jul 20–26 — heat's gone, Team Champs takes Sunday
Hey runners — two things define this week. The heat wave broke, which turns five straight days into genuinely runnable weather for the first time in a while. And Sunday morning the loop belongs to about 5,000 club runners, so plan around it now rather than discovering it at 8 AM.
Weather this week
Highs sit at 79–85°F all week with overnight lows in the mid-60s, but Tuesday and Wednesday both carry showers and thunderstorms before Thursday clears and the weekend turns warm and dry. After last week’s 98°F you can finally run at a normal hour — take Monday and Thursday for quality work, and treat Tuesday and Wednesday as get-it-in-when-you-can days rather than skipping them.
Mon Jul 20 — the best running day of the week
Sunny, 80°F, almost no wind. Nothing touches the drives. The Great Lawn is still fenced for the last day of the World Cup Final viewing setup, so the cinder track around it is out and the 86th Street cut-through picks up pedestrian traffic from the lawn crowd — but East, West, and the Reservoir are all clear. If you have a tempo or a long run on the calendar, this is the day.
Tue Jul 21 — storms, and a full Bandshell at night
Showers and thunderstorms through the day. The drives stay open — this is a run-in-the-rain call, not a closure. If you’re going out in the evening, know that the Naumburg concert fills Bandshell Plaza and the Mall from about 6:30 PM, which pushes strolling crowds toward the 72nd Street Cross Drive right where the loop narrows. Nothing dangerous, just slower.
Wed Jul 22 — wet, plus Rumsey crowds after 7
More thunderstorms, 82°F. SummerStage has a free dance triple bill at Rumsey Playfield at 8 PM, and the queue for those shows spills toward the 72nd Street entrance from around 6:30. Run before then, or take the Reservoir and the Bridle Path, which stay quiet regardless.
Thu Jul 23 — clearing, then the Great Lawn fills
Only a slight chance of showers, 80°F — the second-best running day. Do your mileage in the morning. There’s a free concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM, and those pull people across the mid-park transverses and the 86th Street crossing from late afternoon on. The loop itself is unaffected; your cool-down through the middle of the park won’t be.
Fri Jul 24 — quiet, clearing to sunny
The lightest day on the calendar. Nothing on or near the drives. Bandshell Plaza has a midday meditation gathering, which is the opposite of a crowd problem. Good easy day.
Sat Jul 25 — warm, busy, but the drives are yours
85°F and mostly sunny, so the park is full — full of picnickers, not permits. Nothing on the loop. Go early for the temperature rather than for the traffic. One note: the East Meadow is closed all weekend, so if you use it for strides or a cool-down, it’s out both days.
Sun Jul 26, 7:30–10 AM — NYRR Team Championships 5M takes the loop
The week’s real news. About 5,000 club runners race the NYRR Team Championships, worth double points in the Club Points Series. Start and finish are on the 102nd Street Cross Drive, heading west onto West Drive and running the lower loop, with men’s, women’s, and non-binary points races in the field.
What that means for you:
- The full loop carries race traffic roughly 7–10 AM. The field is large, so it’s occupied for the whole window — not just one direction.
- Staging from 6 AM. Race-Day Central sits behind the backstop of Ballfield #8, near East Drive and 102nd Street, with bib pickup and bag check opening at 6. The north end is congested well before the gun.
- Run before 6:30 AM or after 10:30 AM if you want the loop to yourself.
- Or take the Bridle Path or the Reservoir. Both stay open and clear all morning. The Bridle Path is the better call — soft, shaded, and completely off the race route.
If you’re racing it: five miles isn’t a distance most people goal-race, but double points means your club captain cares more than you do. Get there before 6:45; the north end fills fast.
