Central Park Music & Performance: Jul 20–26 — Naumburg's 121st, SummerStage dance, a Great Lawn concert

Hi music fans — this is the best week of the summer so far. Three free marquee nights in four days: Naumburg’s 121st season Tuesday, a SummerStage dance triple bill Wednesday, and a free concert on the Great Lawn Thursday. Clear your evenings.

Weather this week

The heat has broken into a comfortable 79–85°F week, but Tuesday and Wednesday — the two biggest nights — both carry showers and thunderstorms before Thursday onward turns dry and sunny. Don’t let the forecast talk you out of either show: these are fast-moving summer cells rather than all-day rain, Naumburg’s long-standing convention is to play unless it’s actively pouring, and a poncho plus a plastic bag for your blanket is the entire preparation required.

Mon Jul 20 — Dance Is Life at the Bandshell, 5 PM

An easy warm-up to the week: Dance Is Life takes Bandshell Plaza at 5 PM on the best-weather day of the week — sunny, 80°F, no wind. Worth arriving up the Mall on foot rather than cutting in from the drive.

Tue Jul 21 — Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Naumburg, 7:30 PM, free

The event of the week. Orchestra of St. Luke’s plays the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts at Bandshell Plaza in the series’ 121st season — the oldest continuously running free outdoor classical series in the United States, going since 1905. St. Luke’s is not a filler booking; this is a first-rate chamber orchestra playing for nothing in a bandshell built for exactly this.

Practical notes: the plaza fills from about 6:30, seating is first-come, and the acoustic sweet spot is dead center about fifteen rows back, before the sound starts fighting the elms. Storms are forecast — go anyway, and bring something waterproof to sit on.

Wed Jul 22 — Complexions / Paul Taylor / LaTasha at SummerStage, 8 PM, free

Rumsey Playfield, free, and a genuinely extraordinary triple bill: Complexions Contemporary Ballet, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and LaTasha. Paul Taylor alone would carry an evening — one of the defining American modern dance companies — and pairing them with Complexions’ athleticism makes for a program you would pay serious money for at the Koch.

Doors and queueing start well before 8; the line forms at the 72nd Street entrance from around 6:30. Thunderstorms are again in the forecast for the evening. SummerStage will hold or delay rather than cancel outright when it’s marginal, so get there and wait it out.

Thu Jul 23 — free concert on the Great Lawn, 7 PM

The classic Central Park format: a free evening concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM, on the first properly clear evening of the week. The lawn opens and fills from late afternoon — for these, people arrive with dinner at 5 for a 7 o’clock downbeat, and if you turn up at 6:45 you will be a very long way back. The sound on the Great Lawn is diffuse by nature; sit closer than you think you need to.

Fri Jul 24 — an off night

Nothing musical on the calendar. Bandshell Plaza has a midday meditation gathering at noon rather than a concert. Take the night off — you’ve earned it after three in a row.

Sat Jul 25 — Bandshell at 2, tango at 6

Two smaller pleasures on a warm, sunny day. A concert at Bandshell Plaza at 2 PM, and then the one I’d actually go for: tango at the Shakespeare Statue at 6 PM, at the south end of the Mall. Open-air social tango in golden hour light is one of the park’s genuinely great recurring scenes, and it’s the kind of thing you stumble on once and then look for every summer. That Guitar Man From Central Park plays Hernshead at noon if you’re on the Lake side earlier.

Sun Jul 26 — folk dancing at 11, steppers at 1:30

The Central Park International Folkdancers at King Jagiello Plaza from 11 AM — decades-old, participatory, and a nice antidote to a week of sitting and watching. Then a Steppers performance and dance demo at Summit Rock at 1:30 PM. There’s a large running race on the drives early, which is only relevant as a reason not to drive anywhere near the north end before 10:30.

Weekday daytime — the SummerStage retrospective at the Arsenal

Running all week from 9 AM, free: “40 in Focus: SummerStage through the Lens of Photographer Jack Vartoogian” at the Arsenal. Forty years of concert photography from the series whose stage you’ll be standing in front of on Wednesday. It’s a small show and a perfect rainy-Wednesday-afternoon companion to the week.
