Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Jul 20–26 — dry Monday, wet middle, race Sunday

Hi cyclists — the punishing heat is behind us, and this week reads as a normal July instead of a survival exercise. Two things to route around: a wet Tuesday and Wednesday, and a 5,000-runner NYRR race that owns the loop Sunday morning.

Weather this week

Monday is sunny and 80°F with barely a breath of wind, then thunderstorms move in for Tuesday and Wednesday before Thursday clears into a warm, dry, mostly sunny weekend in the mid-80s. Get your long ride in Monday morning — midweek the drives will be slick and the storm cells fast-moving, and the weekend is dry but crowded enough that early laps beat late ones.

Mon Jul 20 — take the day off work if you can

Genuinely the ride of the week: sun, 80°F, and a nearly still 1 mph wind, which on the loop means no fighting the West Drive headwind on the northern climb. Nothing is permitted on the drives. The Great Lawn stays fenced for the final day of the World Cup viewing setup, so expect foot traffic crossing at 86th, but the road surface is entirely yours.

Tue Jul 21 — storms, then a Bandshell crowd

Showers and thunderstorms, gusting SE at 5–10 mph. The drives are open but wet, and the descent off the Harlem Hill into the north end holds water at the gutter line — take it wide. The bigger evening factor is Naumburg’s concert at Bandshell Plaza: the audience arrives from 6:30 PM and disperses across the 72nd Street Cross Drive afterward. Ride before dusk or accept a lot of pedestrians in your line.

Wed Jul 22 — SummerStage night at Rumsey

Thunderstorms again, 82°F. From roughly 6:30 PM, the free SummerStage dance show fills Rumsey Playfield and the approach through the 72nd Street entrance — that’s a pinch point where spectators step into the roadway without looking. It clears out around 10 PM in a second surge. Between about 6:30 and 8, treat the mid-park section as a no-speed zone.

Thu Jul 23 — the week’s second good day

Slight chance of showers, 80°F, light northerly wind. Clean drives all day. There’s a free concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM; the crowd for that crosses the transverses rather than the loop, but Merchants’ Gate and the 86th crossing get dense from late afternoon. Morning laps are perfect.

Fri Jul 24 — quiet all day

The lightest permit day of the week and clearing to sun by afternoon. Nothing near the drives. The Columbus Circle Food Market runs at Merchants’ Gate from 9:30 AM, which puts pedestrian traffic right at the gate where you enter — worth a soft-pedal through, and worth stopping for.

Sat Jul 25 — the drives are clear, the park is not

85°F and mostly sunny. No permits on East, West, or Center Drive. But this is the first genuinely pleasant Saturday in weeks, so the park will be at full summer capacity — tourists on rental bikes three abreast, pedicabs, the lot. Ride before 8 AM or plan on a social pace. The East Meadow is closed all weekend, and the Saturday Skate Circle sets up at Dead Road North from 2 PM, which sits close enough to the West Drive corridor to be worth knowing about.

Sun Jul 26, 7:30–10 AM — NYRR Team Championships 5M owns the loop

Around 5,000 club runners race five miles for double Club Points, starting and finishing on the 102nd Street Cross Drive, running west onto West Drive and around the lower loop.

For riders this is a hard no, not a “share the road”:

• Race traffic on the full loop roughly 7–10 AM. With a field that size and staggered points races, there is no clean lane.
• Staging on the north end from 6 AM — Race-Day Central is behind Ballfield #8 near East Drive and 102nd, with bib pickup and bag check from 6. Expect barriers, vans, and volunteers on the cross drive.
• Ride before 6:30 AM or after 10:30 AM. Both work; the post-10:30 window is genuinely fine once the barriers come down.
• If you need a Sunday morning ride at normal hours, leave the park. The West Side Greenway is your cleanest substitute — this is one of those mornings where the loop simply isn’t a cycling venue.

Afternoon is a different story: by 11 the drives are back to a regular busy Sunday, and the Skate Circle at Dead Road North from 2 PM is the only other thing worth a heads-up.
