Central Park Sports This Week: Jul 13–19 — full ballfields, a scorching Wednesday
Hi sports fans — a normal-busy summer week on the fields: around 50 adult league permits a day plus youth ball, with no races or crit racing on the loop this week. The wild card is the heat — Wednesday’s 98°F will thin out or shorten a lot of midday play.
Weather this week
A heat wave peaks at 98°F on Wed 7/15, holds in the low 90s Thu–Fri, then breaks with Saturday showers. Expect early games to run as scheduled and midday slots — especially Tue–Thu on the exposed Great Lawn and North Meadow — to feel the heat; Saturday’s cooler air ahead of storms is the best playing day of the week.
League play — the weekly roll-up
Roughly 385 field permits across the window, concentrated at three venues:
- North Meadow — 157 permits (the busiest; adult softball and baseball all week)
- Great Lawn — 119 permits (heavy adult league play; brutal sun exposure midday)
- Heckscher Fields — 103 permits (mixed adult and youth)
- Tennis Courts — 6 bookings on the week
Adult permits run ~45–59 per day; youth ball peaks Tue (6) and Thu (5). No field closures or maintenance days on the calendar this week, so schedules hold — heat permitting.
Wed Jul 15 — 98°F, the day the heat wins
Fields are permitted as usual, but this is the hottest day of the summer. Expect shortened games, heavy hydration breaks, and thin crowds on the exposed Great Lawn and North Meadow. Morning slots are the only comfortable ones.
Sat Jul 18 — Model yachts & bowling greens
Cooler and the best playing day before possible afternoon storms. Two off-diamond highlights: model-yacht racing on Conservatory Water at Kerbs Boathouse (9 AM) and Firecracker Pairs lawn bowling on the Bowling Green (8 AM). Get league and pickup games in during the morning.
Youth programs all week
The CP Sports Summer Program (South Dead Road) and James Christie Soccer Training (Levin Playground / South Dead Road) run daily, with Universal Kids Soccer at the East 106th Street Lawn on Wed. Plus the summer day camps on the West 96th and East Meadow lawns.
Also worth knowing
- Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center — lap swim daily from 7 AM, if you want a cool-down after a game.
- No loop events — no NYRR races or crit racing this week; the drives are open to riders and runners.
