Central Park Running Heads-Up: Jul 13–19 — heat wave week, clean loop
Hey runners — the good news is the loop is genuinely yours this week: no races, no charity walks, no permitted events touching East or West Drive or the Reservoir. The bad news is the heat. This is a front-load-your-mileage week, full stop.
Weather this week
A heat wave builds Monday through Wednesday and peaks at a brutal 98°F on Wed 7/15, easing only slightly to the low 90s Thu–Fri before Saturday showers bring the first real relief. Get long runs done at dawn Mon–Thu — by 9 AM the drives are an oven, and Wednesday you should skip midday entirely; the Reservoir track with its tree cover and the Bridle Path are your coolest options once the sun is up.
Mon Jul 13 — Open loop, the last “reasonable” day
85°F and sunny — hot but survivable. Nothing on the drives; run whatever route you like. Treat this as your quality day before the real heat lands.
Tue Jul 14 — 92°F, dawn or nothing
Loop is clear again, but 92°F means the window closes early. Out the door by 6:30 if you want a comfortable long run; after that, shorten it and stick to the shaded Bridle Path or the Reservoir.
Wed Jul 15 — 98°F, the day to respect
No events, but this is the hottest day of the summer so far. Dawn easy miles only, or move it indoors. If you must run, Reservoir loops under the trees, carry water, and don’t chase pace. SummerStage has a Moroccan-music show loading into Rumsey Playfield tonight (Center Drive area at 72nd) — minor spectator foot traffic after 5 PM, not a factor if you’re running early.
Thu Jul 16 — 91°F, plus Great Lawn concert crowds
Still hot; same dawn advice. Note a free evening concert on the Great Lawn (7 PM) will draw blankets and picnic crowds across the mid-park lawns from late afternoon — nothing on the drives, but your cool-down through the Great Lawn paths will be congested after 5.
Fri Jul 17 — 89°F, easing
The heat finally starts to break. Loop clear. The Columbus Circle food market is running at Merchants’ Gate (from 9:30 AM) — expect a knot of pedestrians at the southwest entrance, easy to run around.
Sat Jul 18 — 88°F with afternoon showers
Best long-run morning of the week: cooler air ahead of the showers, and the loop is open. Get out before noon; storms are possible by mid-afternoon. Rumsey has an afternoon SummerStage show (Anjunadeep, 3 PM) that pulls a crowd toward the 72nd Street area later — you’ll be done by then.
Sun Jul 19 — showers lingering, quiet loop
Cooler and unsettled with lingering shower chances — a good soft-effort recovery day if you don’t mind damp. One heads-up unrelated to the loop: FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle from 6 AM, so the Merchants’ Gate corner is busy and awkward early — enter at 72nd or 90th instead.
Quick recap
- The loop is clear all week — no races or closures; heat is your only constraint.
- Wed 7/15 hits 98°F — dawn miles or skip it; Reservoir and Bridle Path for shade.
- Best long run: Sat 7/18 morning, before afternoon storms.
- Minor crowding: Great Lawn concert Thu evening, Columbus Circle market Fri–Sun, FIFA bus staging Sun early.
