Central Park Family Plans: Jul 13–19 — pool days, storytelling & a campout
Hi families — a hot week means water and shade are your friends, and the calendar cooperates: the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center has daily swims and learn-to-swim sessions, and the weekend brings storytelling, model boats, chess, and an overnight campout. Plan the big outdoor stuff for Saturday when it finally cools.
Weather this week
A heat wave peaks at 98°F on Wed 7/15, holds in the low 90s Thu–Fri, then eases with Saturday showers. Keep Tue–Thu to early mornings, splash pads, and the pool; save the marquee outdoor plans for the cooler weekend.
Mon–Fri — Gottesman Pool & learn-to-swim
The new Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center (Harlem Meer) has lap swim daily from 7 AM, plus Session 1 Parent-and-Tots and Children’s Learn-to-Swim classes on Tue 7/14 and Thu 7/16. On a 90°+ week, this is the single best place to be with kids. Youth soccer and the CP Sports summer program run daily mid-park, but midweek heat means water beats fields.
Tue Jul 14 — Puppet show at the Bandshell, 6 PM
The Magic Raven Theater Company presents a family puppet show (“The Four Little…”) at Bandshell Plaza at 6 PM — an easy evening outing once the day cools a little.
Wed Jul 15 — 98°F, pool-and-shade day
The hottest day of the summer — keep it to the pool, splash areas, and shade. Not a day for the ballfields or long walks.
Thu Jul 16 — Free concert on the Great Lawn, 7 PM
A free evening concert on the Great Lawn at 7 PM — pack a picnic blanket and let the kids sprawl. Arrive before 6 for a good patch of grass; it’s a lovely low-key family night once the heat backs off.
Sat Jul 18 — The big family day
Cooler ahead of afternoon showers, and packed with kid-friendly programming:
- Model-yacht racing on Conservatory Water at Kerbs Boathouse, 9 AM — mesmerizing for little ones.
- Storytelling in Central Park at the Hans Christian Andersen statue, 10 AM — a summer classic.
- Chess lecture, simul & beginners’ workshop at the Chess & Checkers House, 10 AM — great for older kids.
- Family Camping with the Urban Park Rangers on the Great Hill, 7 PM — an actual overnight in the park (registration required through NYC Parks). The highlight of the week if you can get a spot. Aim to do the morning things before storms possibly arrive mid-afternoon.
Sun Jul 19 — Folkdancers & a slower day
Cooler and unsettled. The Central Park International Folkdancers gather at King Jagiello Plaza at 11 AM — fun to watch. If you’re heading to the park’s south end, note FIFA World Cup bus staging clogs Columbus Circle from 6 AM; enter at 72nd instead.
