Central Park Cycling Heads-Up: Jul 13–19 — clear drives, dangerous heat
Hi cyclists — no races, no charity rides, no drive closures anywhere in the park this week, so the loop rides clean top to bottom. The whole story this week is heat and where the pedestrian pinch points are.
Weather this week
A heat wave builds Monday into a 98°F peak on Wed 7/15, holds in the low 90s Thu–Fri, then breaks with Saturday showers. Ride at dawn Tue–Thu — the drives bake by mid-morning and Wednesday’s heat is genuinely dangerous for a hard effort; if you want a real workout this week, Saturday morning ahead of the storms is your window.
Mon Jul 13 — Open drives, 85°F
Clean loop, no closures. Hot but rideable — a good early-morning day before the heat spikes.
Tue Jul 14 — 92°F, front-load it
Drives are clear. Get your laps in before 8 AM; after that the heat off the asphalt on the exposed East Drive stretches is punishing.
Wed Jul 15 — 98°F, dawn only
No events on the loop, but this is the hottest day of the season. Dawn spin only, and go easy — don’t chase Strava segments in triple-digit heat. Evening note: a SummerStage show loads into Rumsey Playfield (72nd/Center Drive) after 5 PM, pushing a few spectators toward the loop near the 72nd Street Cross Drive — a minor congestion point if you’re riding at dusk.
Thu Jul 16 — 91°F, watch the Great Lawn crowd
Loop is open. A free evening concert on the Great Lawn (7 PM) draws heavy foot traffic across mid-park from late afternoon — pedestrians spill toward the 72nd Street transverse and Center Drive crossings, so ride the loop early and give the mid-park crossings extra room after 5.
Fri Jul 17 — 89°F, Merchants’ Gate market
Drives clear and cooling. The Columbus Circle food market runs at Merchants’ Gate from 9:30 AM — expect a pedestrian knot right where you enter/exit at Columbus Circle. Take the corner slow.
Sat Jul 18 — 88°F, best ride of the week
Cooler ahead of afternoon showers and the loop is fully open — this is your day for a real ride. Get out before noon; storms possible by mid-afternoon. Rumsey’s afternoon SummerStage show (Anjunadeep, 3 PM) builds a crowd toward 72nd later, so wrap up by early afternoon.
Sun Jul 19 — unsettled, plus FIFA at Columbus Circle
Lingering shower chances and cooler air — fine for an easy roll if you don’t mind wet pavement. Heads-up at the south end: FIFA World Cup bus operations stage at Columbus Circle / Merchants’ Gate from 6 AM, so that corner is congested and messy early — enter at 72nd or Engineers’ Gate instead.
